"Yes, it's a girl and she's so beautiful that you won't be even able to believe your eyes, when you hold her...," These words sounded as if...as if my husband's informing our in-laws back at home.
I was so horrified as soon as this thought entered my mind that I opened my eyes at once and found him talking on call with someone in front of my bed.
I tried to catch his attention towards me through blank actions but to no avail. He was so busy chattering that I became invisible too and nothing mattered to him right now but somehow he actually stole a glance at me and I tried to ask him mouthing a whisper ' Who is it?'
And as I'd already predicted, he showed me his hand as if asking me to wait. A few minutes later, he finally ended the call and with a smile on his face turned towards me ' Whom were you talking to? ' I asked. "Um.. Guess, who it can be?" He replied mischievously.
"See, I'm in no mood of these games right now, just tell me who it was and if you don't want to then give me your phone I'll check myself. " Saying so I tried reaching for his phone. But he stopped me saying ,
"C,mon Pankhi I was just kidding.""I already told you I'm in no mood of kidding-fidding...."
"Okay, okay calm down! So yes I was talking to your brother Satendra." Hearing my brother's name I caught a sigh of relief.
"He was asking about the baby." He continued.
"And I told him how sweet and adorable she is" He said content while looking at our new born sleeping in the cradle.
"Ok but did Mummy ji and Papa ji called?" I asked him scared.
"Yes they did but only to inform that they are coming over here to see their grandchild and they can arrive at any moment now.
Now did my heartbeat actually rose, "Th-they are coming...? Now?"
"Yes Pankhi, they have the right and authority to meet their grandchild don't they?"
"They do have but have you wondered if their reaction when they will find out that it's their fourth granddaughter?"
He got lost in his thoughts due to my question this time. After a while he spoke very softly that it was hard to even hear it clearly," Whatever it may be, they have to accept her...."
Exactly the next second door to my hospital ward opened and in came my parents-in-law, they had their usual facial expressions which they had throughout the day.
Papaji was as cheerful as he always was but mummy ji's expression scared me as usual. Papaji was wearing a grey shirt and grey pant (his kind of outfit of the day) while mummy ji was wearing a dark pink saree radiating every ounce of her temper. They easily spotted us in our corner and walked to us quickly.
On reaching, Mummy ji instantly spoke,"Congratulations for one more burden on your head." looking at my husband. Hurt was clear on his face right now.
Papaji spoke next," What are you saying Durga!? Aren't you happy that we're blessed with goddess Lakshmi?"
"For the fourth time!"
"Whatever Durga but this is not the place where you start with all your mocking stuff, so just be in your standards atleast until they get discharged."
Next she went around my bed to have a look on the baby. "Uhh, what a dark complexion she has got! I don't know whether she'll be able to fit in our lives also or not."
My heart was breaking in pieces with every word she spoke, still I chose to remain silent due to the compulsion I had to maintain.
But this statement provoked my husband to say," Mummy, what is your problem?" before she could speak he started again,"No just tell me, when it's me who has to raise her, when it's me who is going to bear all her expenses , when it's Pankhi who has to nourish her, take care of her then what is the thing which bothers you? If you can't love her just let it be, we won't force you but please don't disown her, she's your grandchild just like the other four atleast accept her!"
"Listen Samarth, you got it right I'd never love this girl but also would never accept her as my granchild. Shagun was the last girl I managed to accept and now it's high time that I need to stop accepting girls or else you all would just not stop producing them. Further more, stop arguing with me in this manner, be careful or else I'll be the least careful one to control my temper."
"Enough!" Papaji finally spoke "enough of arguments. Samarth, take note of your words before you argue next time and Durga, control yourself! If you can't praise her for her cuteness don't criticise her for her dark complexion. I'm overjoyed to just see how cute she is, I already love her so much and I'm definitely sure that she's going to be a different person from the rest of her cousins and she is for sure going to create history in our Parihar khaandan." he completed while smiling genuinely at me, he petted my head and left asking the doctors about the day and time I'll be discharged along with mummy ji.
I was left touched by his words. I had already expected what came out of mummy ji's mouth but this...this was completely unexpected.
I never knew he was such a gentleman that he whole heartedly accepted his 'Fourth granddaughter'.
This unexpected gesture of love was enough for me to make sure that my child is saved from every harsh word coming her way in future.
I'll protect her with all I have each time she has to face criticism. Samarth placed her in my arms on my request and I hugged her tightly, ready to face more appraisal tomorrow.
