as the sorting ceremony and the grand feast came to an end, ted tonks and a female prefect directed the hufflepuff first years to their house common rooms. it was in the same corridor as the kitchens in the basement of hogwarts.

"now to enter our common rooms all you have to do is tap the barrel two from the bottom in the middle row in the rhythm of 'Helga hufflepuff'," he instructed as he tapped the barrel.

as the door opened, y/n could feel the coziness all the way from the entrance. as they all entered y/n saw a room that reminded her of a badger set with its round, low-ceiling room.

it was filled with honeybee colours (black and yellow) with plants and flowers flourishing in the common room atmosphere.

y/n gasped at the sight.

"it's so beautiful..." she awed and took everything in. the aroma. the atmosphere. the low but light chatter. it felt so cozy... felt so much like home.

"y/n! c'mon! let's share a room together," Emmeline cheered as she gently grabbed y/n's hand and pulled her towards where the female prefect was showing the first-year girls their dorm room.

when Emmeline turned towards her girl friend to smile at her, her eyes widened.

"woah! when did your hair change to a bright yellow?" Emmeline wondered.

quickly looking down you noticed that your hair had changed into a peculiar type of yellow.

ugh. you were doing such a good job at controlling it.

the other girl gasped.

"you're a metamorphmagus? that's so cool! I've always heard about them but I never thought I'd get to see one in real life."

"yeah... I don't quite know how to control it though..." y/n said sheepishly.

"what's a better place to learn than hogwarts, amirite?"

it was the next day and many students were excited to attend their first classes at hogwarts. y/n in particular was bouncy around the walls in excitement in the morning. she loved magic since the moment she found out she was a witch.

y/n and Emmeline sat across from each other in the dining hall, discussing their lessons for the day.

Emmeline was especially excited about charms.

their last class for the day happened to be potions with the slytherins. Emmeline showed her true talent in charms while y/n excelled at defence against the dark arts.

professor slughorn was their potions teacher who was a bubbly and jovial old man. y/n concluded that he was a good-natured person but there was just something off about him.

"for our first potions lesson, I would like to teach you first years how to make wiggenweld potions. it's a basic restorative potion that is a good starting point for beginners like you. now for this lesson, I would like you to get in pairs," Emmeline and y/n, along with several other students, already started marking their partners with one quick look with the eyes. "ah! ah! ah! since it is our first day AND your first time being at hogwarts, today you will choose your partners from the opposite house."

many students groaned in disappointment.

"the instructions are on the board and also your potions textbook so off you all go!"

the classroom didn't move much at all.

some slytherins were disgusted to be partnered with a badger.

a boy sat next to y/n while Emmeline went off to find her own partner. y/n knew this boy.

"regulus! it's nice to see you again," the girl beamed.

"it's nice to see you as well, y/n," regulus smiled.

"it's a shame we aren't in the same house. I would've loved to befriend you."

"it's alright. we're still in the same year. we could still be friends," regulus replied.

"have you ever brewed a potion before?"

"I used to. several times with the help of my brother sirius since he's in year 3 right now. our mother doesn't allow us to make potions anymore, however."

y/n frowned, "awww that's a shame."

"don't worry about it. as long as I'm in hogwarts, I'm freely able to do as I want," regulus gave her a small smile. "fortunately I made wiggenweld potion countless of times so this will be a breeze."

although regulus has stated he made the potions many times, he still let y/n take control and brew it herself to experience creating a potion for the first time. it would've been boring for regulus if he made it himself.

it took y/n a couple of tries to get it right but with the help and supervision of regulus, she was able to make a perfect wiggenweld potion before anyone else in their class.

"might I say I'm very impressed Mr.black and Ms. hightower," slughorn praised the two first years. "brewing up an excellently made wiggenweld potion in their first year is truly remarkable. ten points to hufflepuff and slytherin each!"

"thank you, professor slughorn, but y/n did most of the work."

the girl stared at regulus in confusion.

"he's being modest, professor. I really couldn't have done it without his help."

"you both make excellent potioneers, you should be proud of yourselves!"

it was now dinner time and everyone was gathered in the great hall eating supper. Emmeline was rambling about how she wanted to join the quidditch team but couldn't find the courage since she was only a first year. y/n didn't retain any of that information however because her eyes were focused somewhere else.

"hey! are you listening?" the black-haired girl waved her hand in front of her friend. "who are you looking at?"

Emmeline glanced behind her and saw a certain boy from the slytherin table.

"regulus black?" she turned back to y/n.

"you know him?" y/n asked turning her gaze onto emmeline.

"everyone in the entire Wizarding world knows the black family."

"how important are they?"

"the black family is part of the sacred 28. those are what people normally call 'truly pure blood', families that don't mix themselves with muggles or muggle-borns," as Emmeline went on y/n couldn't help but feel a pain in her chest. "most are pure blood supremacists but not all. even some purebloods that aren't in the sacred 28 are pureblood supremacists but my family never believed in all the rubbish."

"why do they hate muggleborns or muggles so much?"

"they fear that the acceptance of magical and non-magical blood would dilute and negate wizard identity. purebloods and halfbloods that are in support of muggles and muggleborns are also shamed by blood supremacists," Emmeline sighed thinking of the uprising support of blood purity since the rise of voldemort. "I wouldn't get too close to him, y/n... for your own safety. the blacks are notorious for being blood superiority fanatics. wouldn't even think about marrying a halfblood."

"But Regulus seemed so nice when I talked to him?"

"it's only a matter of time before his family brainwashes him with their ideology."
