As I sat down in my seat for the first class of the day, I was struck with a sudden relief that a certain person had not arrived yet, but as seconds passed, that small bit of joy quickly vanished through the air because I knew he'd arrive soon.
He always does.
I was the first one to sit down in my seat as usual due to the distance from my house to the school being only about a ten minute commute and because of the fact that I did not like to stay at home more often than I ought to.
As all my classmates piled in one by one, I grew even more anxious about his absence. I sank lower in my seat and prayed that he wouldn't spot me in my secluded corner in the back of the room. I was not in the mood to deal with his taunts and antics today, especially when I was extremely tired and in need of a nap.
When the final bell rang, everyone was already in their seat, except him and Lauren.
Where could he possibly be?
Lauren was also missing.
Could he be with her?
Images flooded my brain of the two together, kissing passionately against the wall in the boy's locker room and doing other things that made my head hurt.
The door suddenly swung open to reveal Caleb, the one person that always seemed to turn into insecure mush.
My eyes involuntarily slid over the length of him. His dark wash jeans hung low on his hips and his Green Day T-shirt rode up just enough to show a hint of tan skin. He ran his hand through his tousled, uncombed hair, looking like he just woke up, and locked eyes with me in the back. I scowled at him and his grey eyes held mine coolly for a second before quickly looking away.
He walked into class and on his arm was Lauren who looked beautifully elegant as usual, wearing an expensive new white dress with her long blond hair straighten to perfection and her makeup flawlessly done.
My heart skipped a beat at the sight of them together. As much as I hated Caleb, something about him and Lauren together made me really uncomfortable and want to yank her out of his arms.
She was every man's wet dream with big boobs, sleek blond hair, and red lips, everything I did not have. She whispered something seductively in Caleb's ear and he whispered something back in her's, his heated words filled with sensual promise.
"Mr. James and Ms. Ross, take a seat and please attempt to come to class a bit earlier next time," Mr. Hendricks cleared his throat behind his large computer.
"Sorry Mr. Hendricks, I had a long night. I was a bit preoccupied." Caleb winked.
Lauren swatted his arm playfully. I almost threw up. And the entire class roared in laughter at Mr. Hendricks' expression.
Lauren sat down in a seat and waited for Caleb to sit down next to her, but Caleb just shook his head and turned towards the back of the room to where I was sitting.
Lauren's blue eyes shot daggers at me from her seat and I almost laughed in nervousness at the sudden attention. The entire class, including Mr. Hendricks closely watched with surprise clearly written all over their faces as Caleb sauntered towards me. I fought the sudden urge to spring out of my chair and run out of the room.
He sensed my discomfort and flashed me a calculating smile that didn't quite reach his grey eyes before sliding into the seat right next to mine.
