One-sided Rivalry, then Whole-hearted Friendship

Sakura never really liked Hanako.

She was too pretty, too scary, and way too close to her beloved Sasuke kun.

"Stay away from Sasuke kun!" Sakura would yell at Hanako when the brunette was about to walk up to Sasuke.

But Hanako would blink at her, then ignore her. The nerve!

Hanako was someone Sakura was sure no one would like. That was something she and Ino could agree on.

And she wasn't entirely wrong.

Hanako never really understood Sakura. She would suck up to Sasuke, only to be rejected, but would press on harder.

In other words, Hanako thought Sakura was a weirdo.

When Sakura yelled at her, Hanako would take no notice. People practically yelled at her everyday.

In Hanako's point of view, Sakura was just another bothersome person in life to deal with.

That was something she and Shikamaru could agreed on.

But Hanako didn't know if it was right or wrong.

On the day the ninja graduates had to be assigned to their groups, Hanako heard the girls arguing over who should sit next to Sasuke in the academy.

Hanako sighed and slid into the seat next to him, hoping to shut them up.

It worked, for about three seconds before they started yelling at her.

Hanako rolled her eyes. Sakura saw red and tried to throw a punch at her but Hanako caught her fist immediately.

Sakura glared. Hanako stared.

You can imagine Hanako's annoyance and Sakura's horror when they were in the same team.

But the unexpected happened.

The two girls started becoming friends.

" Naruto and Sasuke are fighting again," Hanako groaned. Watching the two boys fighting was very annoying. She flopped onto the grass and stared into the sky.

Sakura was sitting beside her. "They're really stupid sometimes, aren't they?" Hanako laughed.

Sakura was different now, Hanako had noted.

Before the chunin exams, Sakura would complain about Naruto annoying Sasuke, but after that, she came to her senses a little-but of course, she would still have a little obsession with Hanako's other best friend.

Hanako was glad. To not fight, to not endure screaming.

It was nice to have a girl to talk to, not listening to Naruto's hopelessly optimistic attitude for once.

The girls' bond only grew when they both became Tsunade's students.

" I'll never get this right!" Sakura groaned, trying to revive the fish in front of her.

Standing in the Hokage's office, the two girls were training together.

" You'll get it eventually," Hanako soothed. She was sitting on a sofa eating some chips, having finished her assignment.

Sakura grimaced. " Easy for you to say! You got it after what? 10 tries? Must have been at least 50 for me,"

She was exaggerating, of course, but Hanako relented and sat up to help her out.
