*Gelo shifted through his coin piece, greedily lifting his silver coins and spilling them back into his purse as the clangs of metal and shouts of men filled his ears. He tore his eyes away from his beautiful coins and watched the fight. He had bet his money on Abydos. Abydos was known as a champion all across Greece. It was said that Ares himself guided Abydos's sword arm against his enemies. He was battling a upcomer named Melas. Apparently, a few years back Abydos had killed his older brother in single combat. But it appeared he wouldn't get his vengeance today. Abydos swept his blade away and stabbed it into Melas's chest. He gasped and fell into the dirt. He was Abydos's seventh challenger today. The other sixes bodies were being burned at that moment. The crowd surrounding the dying man screamed obscenities and boasts, and then grumbles as money began to change hands. Abydos ripped his blade free and raised the the blood stained sword high and roared triumphantly. Gelo bellowed with laughter and made his way through the crowd, stopping to collect money from several gamblers first. He made his way into the circle and shouted. "And the winner is Abydos! Was there any doubt of the outcome?" He laughed again along with several others. Two men grabbed Melas's arms and legs and carried his body off. "Does anyone else challenge the great Melas?" Gelo asked.
"I do." A pale man shoved his way through the crowd. Several people hurried away nervously and the rest began to back away. Gelo gulped nervously.
"You?" The pale man nodded.
"I am Kratos. Abydos. I've heard Ares favors you. Any man Ares favors... I don't." Two blades appeared in Kratos's hands and he seemed to throw them, but chains connected them to his forearms. Abydos awkwardly dodged them as Kratos swung both chained blades again. Abydos held his sword in front of him but the chained blades struck on opposite ends of his and snapped the warriors sword into pieces. Abydos stared at his sword in disbelief, then at Kratos as he plunged his blades into his chest. He screamed in pain, then he fell silent as Kratos twisted his blades. Kratos kicked his body down and looked at it in silence. He began to walk away.
"Kratos." He stopped. He had heard that voice before.
"Ares!" He growled. Without looking he swung his blades behind him. No one was there. Kratos swiveled, searching around him. Everyone had disappeared. Ares was no where to be seen. Kratos gripped his blades.
"Kratos! Come face me coward!" Kratos turned. Ares stood, halfway concealed behind a building. Kratos growled with rage. He screamed and charged at full speed. The God disappeared behind the wall. Kratos swung around the corner, and Ares stood adjacent to him. He stood with a blade larger than him, his red and gold armor gleaming in the sunlight. Kratos roared with bloodlust and charged, when suddenly Ares, exploded, becoming a giant shadow, enveloping Kratos. He screamed with rage and swung wildly, as the shadow slowly turned into a gaseous like cloud. Kratos choked and fell to his knees. His vision darkened and he fell into the dirt, dragging himself forward weakly before he passed out.
