The moonlight illuminates the rock path as I curiously step out into the backyard. The night is young with the occasional chirping birds as they find the way home.
On instinct, I wrap my arms around myself, shielding my body from the cool breeze.
As I walk more further away from the mansion and deeper into the huge garden, the silhouette of a person catches my eye. The mysterious person is leaned against a tree, their back towards me.
"Who are you?" My voice comes out braver than I expected.
The mystery person towards me and I see bright sparkling eyes staring straight at me.
"Oh, it's you." My hearbeat slows down as I step closer.
"Were you expecting someone else?" He pulls out a cigar and lights it with his lighter.
I scrunch my nose, the smell of the cigar reminding me about my father and his smoking addiction.
"Smoking is unhealthy, y'know." I cross my arms as he faces away from me, looking up at the sky.
He snorts. "And why do you care? I'm sure you would love for me to die."
I look up at him, my eyes grazing over the way his hair falls perfectly against his forehead like if he had styled it. "Just because I would rather be locked in a cage with a tiger than be married to you doesn't mean I want you to die."
He doesn't respond. Instead, he turns to the direction of the mansion before throwing his cigar somewhere.
I roll my eyes about how careless that was.
Suddenly, my encounter with Josh and the reunion appears in my thoughts. Oh, shit. It's in two days and I completely forgot.
"Nicolas!" I run up to him, trying to match his pace. "My high school's having a reunion. Would you like to
come?" I was slightly out of breath. He turns around, one of his eyebrow raised. "I'll check my schedule."
He turns around and walks back into the house.
Tiny droplets of water of water suddenly starts falling from the sky. It looked like tiny diamonds as it created a melody, hitting the ground.
I smile, looking up at the sky. The rain clings to my hair as my clothes stick to my skin, like it's apart of my body.
"Whenever it rains, i'll be looking down at you." My mother's words ring in my ear as tears cloud my vision.
Soon her tenth year death anniversary will be coming up.
I open my arms, still looking at the sky, imagining what it would feel to have my mother with me. How it would feel to be hugged by her, one last time.
"I miss you, mom." My voice cracks.
I stare at the sky a little more, somehow feeling comforted, loved and safe.
"Alessandra! You'll get sick!" Mary, shouts from the patio.
I smile up at the sky once more before jogging back to the mansion.
"What were you thinking?" She wraps a towel around me before pushing me into the house.
"Go change into warm clothes. I made tomato soup." I nod, walking up the stairs, being careful not to trip.
Nicolas is sat on the bed, a book in hand.
"I heard you were standing in the rain for almost thirty minutes?" His eyes stays glued to the book.
I nod, not caring if he sees or not before heading to the closet.
I changethe into an over size t-shirt and sweatpants before drying my hair with my hair dryer.
I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I can't help but study my features some more.
My skin looked healthier along with my hair but most of all, I didn't look like a walking skelton. I had put on just the right amount of weight in the right places.
"You look beautiful." I jump throwing my hairbrush in the skink.
I put my hand on my heart. "You don't scare someone like that!"
He chuckles. "Sorry." He puts his hands out.
"Mary's been calling you for a few minutes now."
I nod, throwing my towel in the hamper.
"Here you go." She places a pillow on my lap and then the warm bowl.
"What movie are we watching?" Nicolas's father and mother walks in.
"Beauty and the Beast?" I suggest.
"I'll go make popcorn." His mother heads to the kitchen as I start the movie.
"Isn't this for kids?" Luca jumps of the back of the couch and sits next to me as Nicolas walks in behind him.
I shush him by throwing popcorn at his face.
My heart swells in happiness as Beast shows her the library.
I smile. That's the type of love I want to experience.
"Let me guess, you want Nicolas to hold hands with you and dance around." Nicolas mocks.
I roll my eyes. "Why haven't you got a girlfriend or a wife. It's annoying having to see your face everday."
I see Nicolas smirking from across the room.
"You're so mean!"
"Go cry about it." I chuckle as he stomps up the stairs.
