You manage to slip from Carl's grasp. He's between you and your car, so you turn tail and run for the club. There will be people there, and light. Both mean safety.
A shadowy figure detaches from the darkness of an alleyway and drags you into the narrow space. Carl catches up in moments. He smiles and it is predatory. You feel your blood run cold as his ears grow pointy and creep up the sides of his skull and his teeth lengthen grotesquely.
You've read enough books and seen enough movies to understand what is happening. But you can't come to terms with it, because the reality is too impossible to be believed, even when Carl and the other creature, both now covered in coarse fur, sink their teeth into your skin.
The world goes black.
When you wake up you're in the hospital. All around you are the noises of machines, soft speaking, and breathing. The patient next door is throwing up. You wrinkle your nose at the stench of bile and try to remember what happened.
It doesn't take long for everything to come back to you. But it's all so absurd. It couldn't have truly happened, could it?
Later that day you're discharged and told you get the remainder of the week to recover. Today is Tuesday, so you were unconscious for three days, and already you're all but healed.
You stay home all week. Timmy and Theo call you every day to check in, as do your parents and your brother.
Theo was the one to find you, you learn. You looked to have been mugged and then left for feral dogs. Your wallet is gone, and your car was found under a bridge on the riverbank on Sunday, where it was abandoned. There were no keys or fingerprints.
Police are working on your case but it is not of the highest priority at the moment. There has been a rise in murders and disappearances lately.
Eventually your week off comes to an end. You reach for your scrubs and hesitate. What if what you remember from Friday night was real? Would it be safe to go work tonight with all the blood and weakness at the hospital?
If you GO TO WORK, go to Step 4 A
If you STAY HOME, go to Step 4 B
