Trace scrubbed his face in his hands, the scruff along his jawline scratching his palm as he sat uncomfortably slouched in the swivel chair.
"I can't believe you," Kyle scolded, raking his dirty blond hair off his forehead. "Why'd you do that?"
Trace shrugged, suspecting he was supposed to be feeling the weight of the situation as heavily as Kyle. "I don't know."
"How are we going to fix your image and have the public see you more in a positive light now?"
With a chuckle, Trace smiled with all his teeth, chin held up in the air playfully. "Sounds like an agent problem."
Kyle slunk into the chair across the table, resting his elbows on the brown laminate tabletop. "I became your agent because you're an amazing tight end, not to figure out how to clean up your reputation."
"Surprise," Trace taunted with a side-smile.
A crease formed between Kyle's thick brows. "You need to start taking this way more seriously, Trace."
"It wasn't a big deal. So what? I started a bar fight—"
"That landed three people in the hospital!"
The smile wiped off Trace's face, thinking back to the brunette who was swaying left and right on her seat from one too many cocktails and the man with fluffy, black curls who was touching her thigh a little too high. The way she whispered the word "stop" was what had caught his attention. It was firm, but also a bit loose. Loose enough for the stranger to prey upon. Trace clenched his teeth, jaw feathering. "One of those men deserved it."
Kyle sighed. "You can't be a vigilante for everyone, Trace."
"Then you picked the wrong football player to represent."
"You got that right," Kyle laughed derisively.
"Are we done here?" Trace abruptly stood, sliding his chair back with a screech as he grasped his jacket and threw it over his shoulder. "I have somewhere to be."
"Where is more important than solving this? You put that woman in the hospital. She almost died. They are blaming you for putting her there."
"I didn't hurt her!" Trace bellowed. "She got caught in the crossfire."
Kyle stood, slamming his hands down on the table between them. "It doesn't matter! There are petitions to get you kicked off the Breakers."
"Yeah, created by women who don't even watch the NFL. They didn't even know who I am. If they did—" Trace bit his tongue. "This would be a nonissue."
All the sharp features of Kyle's diamond-shaped face hardened, making him look more angular.
Trace rolled his eyes. "Whatever. I've got to go. I have a concert to get to."
"A concert?" Kyle shouted, rounding the table. "That's what's more important?"
"Yeah, actually." He widened his eyes with a grin creeping over his face just at the thought of what tonight held in store. "Syler Trixie is waiting for me."
