It all began on a fateful day in 2013 in a small town in Texas, when the 15-year-old Ivy Jones decided that she and her best friend of 13 years were going to start a band. After a year of releasing country covers on YouTube, their duo that they had named 'Midday Disco' finally got the attention they had been hoping for. A few months before, an Australian four-piece band released their first single off their debut album "She Looks so Perfect". The two girls had heard the song on the radio and decided to cover it. They took the song and turned it into their own country version which ended up receiving more attention than they ever thought possible.
(IVY'S POV) - one year later (2014) (Ivy-16, Daisy-18)
"Holy mothertrucking shit Daisy! Our cover is at a fucking million views!!!!" I screamed into my best friend's face.
"Oh my god, Ivy chill the fuck out. Are you sure you're looking at one of our videos?" Daisy responded.
"Yes, I'm sure I'm not an idiot. I checked it like fifty thousand times because I didn't believe it myself, but look, that's our cover of "She Looks so Perfect'' with a million views. LOOK!!!"
"OH. MY. GOD. Shut the fuck up. You're actually lying to me right now. We literally put that video up not even a week ago!"
"I know, but apparently we did something right to get that many views!" I said, "Maybe this really does mean we could possibly hopefully actually make something of ourselves."
Daisy and I looked at each other completely stunned before screaming, falling off my bed, and proceeding to tumble down the stairs to tell my parents that we were going to become a famous country duo.
Later that night after Daisy had gone home to report back to her mom and little brother, I was laying in bed thinking of everything that Daisy and I had put into every single Johnny Cash, Reba McEntire, and other country artist's music we had turned into our own. After posting close to fifty covers, what was it that made this one suddenly go viral? It was the first non-country song we had ever turned country, but I didn't realize that that would make any difference. As I lay in bed I began wondering if this would really work out, I mean I'm only 16 years old and Daisy is 18, we are literally children who have no idea what the fuck we are doing. If we were even lucky enough to get signed and start making music, what would happen if we fail? Then what? I wouldn't have even graduated high school. Daisy is starting to apply to colleges, our lives are starting to become two separate lives and not the interwoven life it has been since we were babies. As all of these possibilities started flooding my mind I began to lose the hope that I had obtained merely hours before. I immediately grabbed my phone to call Daisy to make sure that my brain was just being stupid and that I had nothing to be scared about.
"Ivy, why the hell are you calling me at fucking 2 in the morning?" Daisy growled through the phone.
I sniffed a little before answering, "I'm sorry, I just-" I choked on a sob before I could continue.
"Oh my god Ivy what's wrong?!?!"
"Oh you know I'm just spiraling because I'm terrified you're gonna choose to go to college and Steven instead of chasing our country music dreams" I sobbed.
"Oh, babe no! We have been working toward this goal for a year and dreaming about this since we were babies. I don't care about college, it will still be waiting for me after we become world-renowned country stars, and Steven isn't going to stop us. He will be our number-one cheerleader in everything we do. No stupid boyfriend could ever get in our way."
"Oo-ok I guess I'm just scared. I really want this to work out and I hate the idea of us giving up before we've even really started. Our little duo and especially you mean so much to me and I'm just scared that you're gonna decide that you should take the responsible path and go to college and leave me." I sniffed.
