The midday sun bore down on the small, weathered beach house as Sarah sat on the porch steps, idly flipping through the pages of a magazine. She watched the waves crash against the shore, their rhythmic movement strangely calming. The salty breeze rustled her hair as she contemplated the summer ahead.

"Sarah," called her father, John, from the open door of the beach house. "Come inside for a moment. There's something we need to discuss."

Sarah sighed, reluctantly putting the magazine aside and pushing herself up from the steps. She had been hoping for a peaceful summer of solitude, not more family drama. She followed her father inside the beach house, which felt foreign to her, despite being a place from her childhood.

John sat at the worn wooden table, his new wife, Lisa, beside him. Lisa, with her perfectly coiffed hair and designer sunglasses, was an unfamiliar figure in Sarah's life. John and Lisa had married just a few months ago, and this was their first family outing together. Sarah still wasn't sure how she felt about it all.

"Sit down, Sarah," John said, gesturing to the empty chair across from him. "We have something important to discuss."

Sarah took her seat, feeling a pang of discomfort in her chest. She'd had a complicated relationship with her father since her parents' divorce a few years ago. The divorce had left her feeling torn between her parents, and now, with the arrival of Lisa, things were even more complicated.

John cleared his throat, his gaze fixed on Sarah. "We've been invited to spend the entire summer at this beach house," he began, his tone more serious than Sarah had expected.

Sarah frowned. "Who invited us?" She hadn't heard of any plans for a summer getaway.

Lisa leaned forward, her voice warm but slightly strained. "It was a surprise from your dad. He thought it would be a great opportunity for us to bond as a family."

Sarah couldn't help but roll her eyes at the suggestion. She'd heard the same sentiment countless times since the wedding, and it always felt forced. She couldn't shake the feeling that Lisa was trying too hard to be the perfect stepmother.

"Sarah," John continued, "I know things have been a bit rocky between us, but I really want us to have a chance to connect and get to know each other better."

Sarah remained silent, her mind racing with conflicting emotions. She had never been one for confrontations, and the idea of spending an entire summer cooped up in a beach house with her father and Lisa made her uneasy.

"We can all use a fresh start," Lisa added, her voice tinged with optimism.

Sarah nodded, not trusting herself to speak. She looked out the window at the endless expanse of ocean, wondering if this summer could really be a new beginning for their fractured family.

Little did she know that this beach house held secrets that would soon unravel their lives in ways she could never have imagined?
