The journey to the beach house had been long, with Sarah retreating into her headphones and the world of her music to block out the awkwardness that lingered in the car. She watched the landscape transition from bustling city to tranquil coastal town, the ocean gradually coming into view. The sight of the waves crashing against the shore gave her a sense of both nostalgia and foreboding.

As they pulled up to the beach house, Sarah couldn't help but feel a sense of déjà vu. The small, weathered cottage was a place she remembered from her childhood, a place that held both fond memories and painful reminders of her parents' divorce.

"We're here," John announced as he parked the car. He turned to Sarah with a forced smile. "Remember how much fun we used to have here, sweetheart?"

Sarah nodded, though the memories were bittersweet. The beach house had once been a place of laughter and family togetherness, but now it felt like a relic of a time long gone.

They exited the car, and Sarah took a deep breath of the salty sea air. The familiar scent was strangely comforting. She glanced at Lisa, who seemed excited about their arrival. It was clear that Lisa was optimistic for this summer, but Sarah couldn't shake her reservations.

Inside the beach house, Sarah felt a sense of unease wash over her. The rooms were filled with mismatched furniture and faded beach-themed decor. It was a stark contrast to the polished and modern home she had become accustomed to with her mother.

Sarah claimed one of the small bedrooms with a view of the ocean, but her excitement was short-lived. As the hours passed, the awkwardness between the three of them only deepened. John and Lisa tried to engage in small talk, but their strained conversations only highlighted the divisions within the family.

Lisa, attempting to break the ice, suggested they play a board game. Sarah reluctantly agreed, and they gathered around the kitchen table. The game started off light-hearted enough, but as the competition heated up, so did the tension.

John's competitive nature emerged, and he playfully taunted Lisa whenever he won a round. Sarah tried to maintain a neutral stance, not wanting to be caught in the middle of their bickering. She watched as Lisa's smile began to falter, replaced by a strained expression.

As the evening sun cast a warm, golden glow over the beach, Sarah retreated to the porch. She gazed out at the waves, the same waves she had watched earlier, and wondered how she had ended up here. She longed for the simplicity of her life before her parents' divorce, before the intrusion of Lisa.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, John and Lisa joined her on the porch. They attempted to make amends for the tense atmosphere, but Sarah could tell that they were all just going through the motions. She knew that this family reunion was not going to be the magical bonding experience they had hoped for.

Sarah, feeling a pang of guilt and so tried to engage in conversation. "Dad, Mom mentioned that you two had planned something special for this summer. What is it?"

John exchanged a glance with Lisa, a moment of silent communication that did not go unnoticed by Sarah.

"We do have something planned," John finally replied, his voice measured. "But it's a surprise. We thought it would be more fun to reveal it as the summer unfolds."

Sarah's curiosity was piqued, but she couldn't help but feel like an outsider. Her father and Lisa shared a connection she couldn't quite understand, and it made her uneasy.

As Sarah settled into her bed that night, she couldn't help but feel like a stranger in her own life. The beach house held a promise of nostalgia and togetherness, but the reality was far from it. She closed her eyes, hoping that sleep would bring some reprieve from the uncertainty that loomed over their summer.
