CHAPTER TWO . TO CATCH A SWIMMING FISH

▅▅▅

— THE IUDEX OF FONTAINE ALWAYS KNEW WHAT TO DO.

In his long reign as the incumbent representation of law and order, Neuvillete has only ever slacked off once. And even then, it was actually him taking a vacation leave for a week (an overdue one of a hundred years).

Sure he could take one now if he wanted to. But crimes barely take any breaks, so why should he?

His gaze shifted from the bronze needles of the ticking clock, watching as it dragged itself so painstakingly slow before heaving a sigh and taking the account folder Sedene had left for him to peruse in his free time.

Difficult or not he handled every case with impartiality and carried on with his day. Quite easy.

But how to deal with this?

In his hand was your case profile. An innocent immigrant to the nation was accused by a Melusine of breaking the law upon your first step. Neuvillette would not be surprised if you no longer wanted anything to do with Fontaine.

Although you were dismissed after the situation was rectified, it still felt wrong to treat it as a case closed. But how would he tread this circumstance without sounding ridiculous as he explained why blue, legally, is not allowed during Wednesdays?

"She looks quite fetching," Focalors lauded beside him as her nimble hand took your picture from the files to admire.

"Lady Furina, I'm surprised you're still here at this time of the day." Neuvillette commented, still skimming through your files. Ah, [Name] has graduated the class valedictorian.

While Neuvillette working over his hours was habitual, Focalors' routine was different. By routine, he meant that she usually left early from work on Wednesdays to run to that confectionary shop she endlessly sang praises of.

The Hydro Archon gasps before placing her hand against her chest, "How harsh of you, my dear Neuvillette. Is that how badly you want me out of your office?"

Neuvillette bit back the urge to answer yes.

Mainly because he knew that if he did, the Archon would go for over an hour crying like a petulant child about how much the time they spent together had meant nothing to him at all.

It was hard to understand the dynamics of their working and non-working relationship. The god of Justice embodied her role well in and out of court. When he needed advice regarding social cues, she openly gave them— taught him even. Granted that she was a god, Furina was much more acquainted with the fluctuations of human emotions, often found interacting with them. And Neuvillete was grateful for her, truly he was.
