And when we came to terms with the fact that life is finite, the thought of death lost all its horror. The end is coming anyway. The only question is how you want to go out. On your feet or on your knees.
Talking about corpses was the only appropriate thing to do at this point. What Leon found here were bodies, not corpses.
To Leon, there was a difference between the two. Corpses might still be human, but unlike corpses, a dead person was still clearly recognizable and identifiable as a human, not like this one.
The eyelids of the first person had been removed along with the eyeballs, leaving Leon staring at two empty shells. The ears were missing from the second body. And as for number three, the lips were missing, revealing the teeth, and upon closer inspection, Leon saw that the tongues were missing as well.
Aside from this mutilation, Leon could not immediately tell if the person in question was a man or a woman. The three looked as if they had been caught in a fire and escaped too late. They had missing hair and burns all over their bodies.
As for the fourth victim, he was hanging on the wall a room away, like a puppet. Much more recognizable than the first three, but still not much to look at.
Puffing thoughtfully, Leon straightened up and looked over his shoulder at the open door behind him that led to the room with the three bodies.
Eyes, ears, tongue. See, hear, speak. See no evil! Hear no evil! Speak no evil! And victim number four. Have no fun!
But the four were not in the same room. Three and one. Which could mean that four didn't necessarily belong with the other three.
Leon would find out to what extent the four people belonged together once the bodies were identified. Everything else was just guesswork and theories. Nothing solid.
