I stare at him, not quite believing him.
"You're dead?" I whisper-shout.
He nods, frowning.
"But.." I wonder how this is possible.
"You're the only one who can see me" he cries, "help me, please"
"But.." I repeat.
"Never mind, you're only 5 anyways, no doubt about it- you of all people won't understand" he frowns deeper.
"Elliot?" I whisper, concerned.
"Yeah, kiddo?" He replies sharply.
"Why can only I see you?" I question him.
"You have a special gift, Bella, a very special one at that" he smirks.
"What do you mean" I worry.
"You can see the dead" he smiles fully, "you cannot tell anyone ok? They'll kill you"
"Who?" I ask, slightly shocked.
"I'm sorry, I really am" he fades away.
Where he was standing just a few seconds ago is now just air, as though nothing ever was there. I wonder about what he means.
I glance up at the attic window.
"That's where you're staying" Lynne snaps and pushes past me into the house.
I frown and follow her inside. Taking a deep breath, I walk slowly up the stairs and up to the dusty attic. I throw my suitcase down on an old mattress and sit beside it, pondering still, about what Elliot meant.
"Girl!" Lynne screams up the stairs.
I stamp down the creaky wooden stairs and stare at her.
"Yes?" I reply, sounding as grown up as possible, raising an eyebrow.
"Your dad.." She trails off.
"When is he coming?" I ask, excited to leave this place.
"He..died" she whispers, not even upset.
I begin to cry. And I won't stop. Not even if she beats me.
"Oh will you please shut up" she snaps, "crying? That's for wimps"
"So I have to live here, with you?" I snap back, apparently not the best decision.
"No!" she barks, chuckling slightly, "why would I want you?"
I frown, "where will I go?"
"Don't care" she snarls half heartedly.
"Are you going to kill me?" I cry.
"No, you thick little freak" she laughs and slaps my cheek.
I place my hand where she slapped and feel the worst stinging sensation ever.
"You're going into foster care" she says after a long silence.
"What does that mean?" I glare at her.
"You're going to be looked after by different families" she sighs. And that's how I ended up in foster care.
