Annamarie Scalli walked briskly down the road to her home in East L.A. from her job. She was still a nurse but now she worked in a nursing home for the elderly. She was finding her peace in life, at least to a certain degree. She still missed working for the hospital in Seattle. She no longer cried herself to sleep every night while looking at the pictures of the child she had gave up for adoption. It had been agreed that the adoptive parents no longer required to send her annual pictures. It had been months since she received the last photo of the boy who was growing up to be the spitting image of his father.
She used her mother's maiden name now. Nothing in her appearance resembled the curvaceous woman in a murder case. The night before last Annamarie caught a clip of Roseanne on the evening news. The sight of the courthouse in the background almost made her physically ill. She had been debating with herself if she should get involved and tell the police what she knows. It would just make it worse for Roseanne she reckoned. Annamarie had an ominous feeling that the interest in Hank's case, would inevitably bring interest in finding her, and she was terrified to have that happen.
Milly Johnson dropped off her son, Wally, who had an appointment with Dr. Jack Marrow, at The Remington Health Management Center. The specialist said that schizophrenia was a mental illness that frequently surfaced in teenage years or early adulthood. Milly didn't want to believe that was the answer. " Wally's just lonely for his dad," is what she'd tell people. Wally used to talk about getting married and having a family, but she knew now that was not most likely to happen. He was too touchy, and lost his temper too easily. What would happen to Wally if she died, was a ceaseless worry of Milly's. That's why she pledged to take care of and to protect her son who'd been so badly abused by life. She would try to make him take his medicine although he would just spit it out later, but Wally was very responsive to Dr. Morrow and she faithfully dropped him off for an hour knowing he was in capable hands.
Dr. Jack Marrow had a corner office located on the ground floor of the center. Dr. Marrow's medicine cabinet had been broken into and emptied, and he was lying on the floor with two bullet holes in his chest. Wally entered the office as usual but the receptionist who usually greeted him wasn't there. He didn't know what to do because he had never encountered a situation like this. He looked around the office for the receptionist who was hiding in the closet terrified out of her mind.
Two armed security guards entered the Dr. Marrow's office because someone triggered the silent alarm. Wally was triggered and he began screaming and shouting. The security guards viewed him as a threat that needed to be taken out quickly, as a result Wally was tased until he became unconscious. The guards called the police and Wally was taken to jail. The police were sure it was a drug related open and shut case.
Milly Johnson was in the process of basting a chicken. It was one of Wally's favorites. The inviting fragrance filled the house, and the act of cooking calmed Milly, which she needed before picking Wally up from the center. It was a reminder of the years when her husband was alive and Wally was a bright student and normal little boy. She put the chicken back in the oven as she was going to close the oven door her cellphone rang. The police officer informed Milly that Dr. Morrow's medicine cabinet had been emptied and therefore they were sure it was a drug related crime. She couldn't comprehend what the officer was saying because her only concern was Wally. " Where's Wally? I just dropped him off at the Center. Where would he have gotten a gun? Officer my son is disabled. I need to see him." " Yes I understand that Ma'am but you won't be able to see him for awhile. A man was murdered and your son was there standing over him." " My poor boy! Can you imagine how frightened he must be if he stumbled upon his doctor's dead body? How traumatized? He needs a doctor. I demand you let him speak to a professional!" Milly exclaimed before hanging up. Roseanne Park was the only person she could think of in that moment.
