As I played the song, the notes sunk gently into my head. It was Beethoven and the tune was Moonlight Sonata, I had always liked its peacefulness, the way it made you feel so alone. The bell rang, and my playing was interrupted. It was ‘home time’. I packed up my bag and shoved in my music papers then closed the lid of the piano and walked out of the room. Mr Conway glanced at me and uttered, “Michael, we will be leaving early tomorrow morning”. Not making eye contact, I carried on strolling down the corridor and exited the school gates. We had been practicing for a long time now, a few months, for a concert in some country, somewhere. It sounded quite boring but hey! – my parents wanted me to do it!

The next day John, Sam, Mr Conway and I all waited to board our plane. We sat down in the departure lounge until we heard over the speaker system that we were ready to leave. I picked up my luggage and walked down the departure hallway into the plane. Our seats were B4, B5, B6 and B7. I found my seat and sat down with the others. We were in business class for some reason and so the seats were quite big and comfortable, and there was a neat table that folded out. The steward went through the safety instructions, talking about putting your life jacket on, putting on your mask, and all of the other typical things – yawn... But then we were ready for take-off. My body was thrown back in the chair as the plane’s engines suddenly accelerated to full thrust. The nose of the plane lifted off the ground and we were then in the air and increasing in altitude rapidly. I could see houses and buildings and a lake. Then the clouds engulfed the plane and there was nothing more to see.
