The gritting sound of pebbles fighting for their lives beneath the wheels of the vehicle had become more prominent with the more time I'd spent travelling. I know that I've probably only been in here for around twenty minutes, but god did it feel like an eternity had passed. Kids could have been born, learned to walk and graduated university in the time it took me to get from point A to point B.
"Are you doing alright back there, Y/n?" I nodded, leaning my head against the cold window, the warmth of my slow breaths causing patches of fog on the icy glass. Little patterns formed from the frosty weather in the corners as if Elsa was helping decorate the car, making light of this situation.
Not too long after, we pulled up to a house in a suburban area of Paris. And when I say it's big, I mean that there may as well be a royal family living there.
She got out of the car, knocked on the front door and unlocked my car door. "Come on, don't be shy." I replied by frantically shaking my head, simply refusing to move. "Y/n... get out of the car..." her voice started to deepen into a more threatening tone while that same passive aggressive smile stayed plastered on like badly stuck down wallpaper. A man came over.
"Is everything alright here? I'm Jacob, it's a pleasure to finally meet you Y/n! Why don't you come on out and we'll give you a tour of the house?"
I stayed frozen. Another woman came out.
"Oh I bet you're freezing, dear. We have hot cocoa?!"
The same reaction; although I was refusing to move, Miss White forcefully unplugged my seatbelt and pulled me out of her car. They all walked ahead chatting whilst I slowly skulked in behind them. It was ever so grand, I shouldn't be here.
"Well, that's the tour! Let me know if you ever want anything and I'll be happy to get it! The first bedroom we showed you is yours, our son has gone to the boarding school after he left Fançois DuPont last year. He's in high school, but you'll be going to the same middle school as him!" The new lady announced with glee, the Jacob man wrapping his arms around her and smiling. "I'm sure you'll like it there! Our daughter Brooke is in the same year as you! And I'm sure Suzie here will happily answer any questions if she won't." Miss White suddenly butted in.
"BROOKE! Don't worry, their daughter, or shall I say your new sister, is nice. You WILL get along with her." Once again, a phrase being muttered whilst caked in passive aggression. "Oh my god like what do you want?" She spat, her bullish thuds echoing down the stairs... and likely down the streets...
"Brooke, this is Y/n. Your parents Jacob and Suzette have KINDLY offered to take care of her. I can trust you'll help her settle in?"
"Alright, like, whatever." She trampled back up the stairs and rolled her eyes on the way past, Miss White left and slammed the door behind her as if the wind had blown this heavy sack of bricks off her shoulders.
"So, sweetie, would you like that warm drink?"
...
"What about some homemade caramel sauce?"
...
"It's alright dearie, if you're not ready to talk yet then we won't force you, we understand about your... circumstances."
I nodded, looking down at my foot and twisting it slightly, letting Jacob usher me up the stairs and into the bedroom I will be staying in. It was in the roof of the house, one wall was bricks with a window on the slanted ceiling directly above the bed. He went under it and handed me a box.
"We were told some things about you and what you've been through, so I thought that we could collect a few things that might help you settle in. Do you want me to go through them with you? It's fine if not, I'm happy with whatever you decide as long as you feel safe and comfortable." I stayed silent, looking down and pulling on my fingernails, gently snapping off what little clippings were left of them. He nodded to himself, taking the tape off the box to reveal what the contests were.
My own personal toiletries - all softly scented, a pink hairbrush and comb, a really soft and fluffy blanket and finally a fuzzy rabbit plush.
"I heard that your mother used to play with your bunny with you so thought that you'd like having something similar?" I nodded gently, holding it in my hands and letting my mind gently threaten to wander back to a time like that.
"Are you hungry?"
I shook my head no.
"Are you tired?"
I waited for a minute before nodding my head.
"I can go to Brooke and get some pyjamas for you to-" I shook my head no, moved the box except for the bunny and climbed into the bed after kicking my shoes off gently and facing the wall on the bed.
"Oh... alright... you should get some sleep, you start school tomorrow!"
...
"Goodnight, Y/n."
