Troye POV

He's been staring at me for ten minutes.

Him, the boy in the elaborate black mask, obscuring half of his face in its half-moon shape. It was adorned with onyx and silver colored glitter, revealing only the lower left part of his face, rendering him completely anonymous - despite the fact that unlike the majority of the people here, he had platinum dyed hair, making him stand out from the crowd of natural-colored people in the ballroom.

He drew the eye to him, an air of mystery that caused people to glance his way and raise their eyebrows in wonder at who this intriguing stranger was. I wasn't an exception myself either, having looked his way a few times since he'd shown. I was hoping I'd been discreet, wishing that he wouldn't notice the lingering stares that had been sent his way, amongst the large crowd that have been doing roughly the same thing.

But then once, he caught me looking in particular from the dark corner of the room, his blue eyes entrapping me behind his mask, where I'd been miraculously left alone due to the simple white mask I'd opted for tonight, and he hasn't looked away since.

My eyes had flitted away from his instinctively, not wanting to bring attention on myself. There was a reason I'd gone for such a nondescript white mask tonight: being the eldest son of the King, and the heir to the throne, I've had enough people looking my way to last a lifetime. From young women hounding me in my teen years to recently crowned knights seeking favor from a Royal, I'd learned early on in life that a moment to myself was a rare one, and that the quiet, undisturbed moments were ones to hold on to before they slipped out of my grasp, like water through my fingers.

That being said, the idea of even one person looking at me in my lonely state, at the annual Masquerade Ball, should've been considered one of my worst nightmares - especially when said onlooker was attracting so much attention himself.

At the same time, however, I couldn't say I minded it. Not from him, the bold stranger, who looked at me with a keen interest in his eye. What I noticed that was different about his interest, oddly enough, was that he didn't seem riveted by me because he recognized me; instead, he appeared to be curious because he didn't know who I was, mildly fascinated as to who was hiding behind the unremarkable white mask.

I had to admit, that I had the urge to approach him. Of course, I'm sure a lot of people did, captivated by the man's evident presence, but I had to resist myself. No one knew about my personal preferences, when it came to romance, and I was going to keep it that way.

A complete stranger, no matter how compelling he was, was not going to change that.

But his piercing gaze resting on me was sure as hell not helping my resolve stay in tact.

Not long after, the music playing made an abrupt change, decreasingly its pace dramatically. Taking it as their cue, couples made their way to the center of the dance floor, bowing and curtsying and taking positions. Others, who did not have a date, courted each other, asking politely for permission before assuming their own stance.

I took a quick glance around, looking for any members of my family that may be watching. After a short observation, I gathered that neither if my parents were present, my sister was occupied by a small crowd of Lords asking for a dance, and my younger brother, Tyde, was one of the few standing on the sidelines, still too young to really ask anyone, seeing as he was only thirteen.
