As Sophie arrived at dance practice, she couldn't shake off the unease that had kept her awake the previous night. Her late arrival meant she found an empty spot, and to her surprise, James was nowhere to be seen. However, Theo, ever the reliable friend, was present.
Theo approached Sophie with a warm smile. "Hey there, Sophie. You're a bit late today."
Sophie offered an apologetic smile. "I couldn't sleep well last night, so I overslept. And it seems James isn't here either."
Theo nodded in understanding. "Yeah, I noticed he's been absent lately. Maybe he needed some time to clear his thoughts."
As they began to practice together, Sophie and Theo soon fell into a comfortable rhythm, their familiarity with each other making the dance steps seem effortless. They found themselves catching up on the weeks they had spent apart, realizing how much they had missed each other's company.
"It's been too long since we had a proper conversation," Theo remarked with a nostalgic smile.
Sophie agreed, feeling a sense of warmth in their rekindled friendship. "You're right, Theo. I've missed talking with you."
Their dance practice continued as they chatted, Theo offering a perspective that Sophie hadn't considered. "You know, Sophie, I understand you're worried about James, but these are hard times for him. Losing his grandfather was a significant loss. Maybe he just needs some space to come to terms with it."
Sophie nodded thoughtfully, realizing that her concerns about James's behavior might be related to his grief. "You're right, Theo. I'll try to be more understanding and give him the space he needs."
However, as the conversation turned to the upcoming debutante ball, Sophie couldn't help but express her worry. "Theo, I appreciate your advice, but I can't help but feel anxious about not having a partner for the ball. I want everything to be perfect, and I don't know if I'll find someone in time."
Theo placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry, Sophie. You're an amazing person, and I'm sure someone will be lucky to have you as their partner. And if worst comes to worst, you'll have me as a backup partner."
Sophie chuckled, grateful for Theo's unwavering support. "Thank you, Theo. You always know how to put things in perspective."

Sophie and Rosie stood amidst the racks of exquisite gowns in the elegant dress store, their excitement palpable as they chatted about the upcoming debutante ball. The ball was approaching rapidly, and the anticipation hung heavy in the air.
Rosie, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm, said, "Can you believe it's just a few weeks away, Sophie? This is going to be the grandest event of the year."
Sophie nodded, a mix of excitement and nervousness coursing through her. "I know, Rosie. It's both thrilling and nerve-wracking at the same time. I can't believe we're finally becoming debutantes."
As they continued to chat, one of the store's sellers, a poised and elegant woman, approached Sophie with a warm smile. "Mademoiselle Sophie," she said, "I believe I have a gown that might be perfect for you. Please, come with me."
Sophie's curiosity piqued, she followed the seller to a secluded corner of the store where a stunning gown awaited her. The dress was a vision of elegance, adorned with intricate red roses embroidered on a pink fabric. Its flowing silhouette and the delicate details hinted at the enchantment it held.
As Sophie gazed upon the gown, a soft murmur escaped her lips. "I think this is the one."
The seller beamed, her eyes reflecting Sophie's excitement. "Shall we try it on, Mademoiselle Sophie?"
Sophie nodded eagerly, her heart racing with anticipation as she stepped into the dressing room. She couldn't help but feel that this gown might be the perfect choice for the most important night of her young life.
As for her date, James had yet to make his intentions clear regarding whether he'd ask Sophie to the ball. Their friendship had endured some recent strain, leaving Sophie feeling uncertain about their current status. When Paul officially extended an invitation to be his date, Sophie decided not to decline. Paul had been consistently kind and attentive ever since they met, which provided a valid reason for her acceptance.
However, Sophie couldn't ignore the underlying unease she felt, especially due to James's sporadic attendance at dance practices and rumors suggesting he would attend the ball with Adeline. While Sophie did her best to act nonchalant about it, deep down, it did affect her. She understood that she and James couldn't be together right now, but agreeing to go to the ball with him didn't necessarily mean she was embarking on a deeper romantic commitment with him.
