Chapter 33 (Unedited)

Song for the chapter: "Bloodstream" by Stateless.

Aaron's POV

Meredith's words reverberated in my mind like a haunting echo. It was a revelation that defied all reason, an enigma that shattered the carefully constructed reality I had come to accept. The notion of my mother being alive after all these years was beyond comprehension.

How? I thought, my mind reeling in disbelief. How could she be here now, when all we knew was that she had vanished into the abyss of our tumultuous past?

The flood of questions surged through my thoughts, a tempest of uncertainty. Where had she been hiding, concealed from the world, from us? Was she safe, or had she been living in the shadows, vulnerable to the perils of the world she had once inhabited?

The deepest recesses of my heart were consumed by concern for her well-being. But intertwined with that concern was an undeniable wariness, a caution born from years of secrecy, deception, and the darkness that had surrounded our family like a suffocating fog.

"Mom?" My voice quivered as I spoke her name, a mixture of disbelief and concern lacing each syllable. "Is that really you? Where are you? Are you okay?"

Her response, however, did little to alleviate the trepidation that gripped me. She artfully deflected my inquiries, sidestepping any meaningful answers. It was as if she were guarding a hidden truth, one she was unwilling or unable to share.

What is she hiding? I pondered, the weight of her words heavy on my shoulders. Why won't she tell me where she's been all these years? Is she in danger, or has she returned with an ulterior motive, some hidden agenda of her own?

The walls of doubt and uncertainty closed in around me, enclosing me in a labyrinth of mysteries. It was a puzzle, a riddle, and I couldn't deny the nagging suspicion that my mother's reappearance held the key to unlocking the secrets of our family's dark history.

Is she a savior or a harbinger of more darkness to come? The question hung in the air, unanswered and unsettling.

"Aaron," she said, her tone heavy with accusation, "your father lied to you, to both of you. He kept me hidden from you all these years, out of fear and his dark business. You need to know the truth."

Meredith's words were a stark reminder of the tangled web of deception that had always lurked within our family. Her accusation weighed heavily on my conscience, adding to the turmoil that churned within me.

Is it possible? I wondered, my skepticism warring with the desperate desire to believe her. Could my father have kept such a monumental secret from us? And why?

The years of silence and uncertainty had carved deep crevices in my soul, and now, faced with the reappearance of the woman I had believed was lost forever, I couldn't help but question everything I thought I knew.

What did she mean by his dark business? My mind raced with possibilities, each one darker and more sinister than the last. I had always known that our family was entangled in illicit dealings, but the true extent of it had remained shrouded in secrecy.

Meredith's enigmatic return had torn open old wounds, and the truth she hinted at seemed both elusive and menacing. The path ahead was fraught with treacherous uncertainties, and I couldn't deny the growing urgency to uncover the secrets that had kept our family ensnared in darkness for so long.

But can I trust her? The question echoed in my thoughts, a haunting refrain. Or is her reappearance merely the beginning of a new chapter in our family's never-ending saga of secrets and shadows?
