chapter five: stay

She stands up just as he makes it to her. He immediately hugs her. Riley grunts in pain as the embrace is putting pressure on the bruise forming at her side.

"Are you okay?" He asks. She pulls her shirt up, a deep purple color already developing where Ghostface kicked her.

Ethan is pained to see her hurt. "What happened?"

"Ghostface showed up and went after Sam and Tara," she tells him. "I tried to distract him and ..."

He cuts her off with another hug, being careful of her side this time. She hugs back, burying her face into his neck. This is the closest they've been enough for her to smell him — his scent or whatever cologne he's wearing becomes comforting for her.

"Do you need to go to the hospital?" He asks, pulling away to check on her.

She lifts her shirt one more time. Since she can breathe fine, she dismisses it. "I'll be fine. Just a bruise."

Ethan's eyes are still full of worry. "Can I at least walk you home?"

She's flattered and nods. She takes his hand in hers, holding it the whole way to her apartment.

She gets home and showers, while Ethan serves as a 'lookout' for her to feel safe.

He roams her apartment — admiringly, being nosy. He remembers the bloody backpack, further inspecting it.

He opens the main pocket, seeing two Ghostface outfits. He sees her bloody knife, and pieces together that she was the one who killed Jason. Ethan knows his dad will be mad about this.

Ethan moves to Riley's room to do some further investigating. He looks in her nightstand first, and blushes when he only finds a purple vibrator. He shuts the drawer and moves on to a desk.

Inside the desk drawer, she finds a list of names:
Jason
Chad
Mindy
Sam ?

He's kind of surprised to see Riley having it out for her 'friends'. There's nothing else in the drawer saying why she dislikes this list of names, but Ethan sees the obvious tension between her and Chad. He knows they're exes, but what happened?

Meanwhile, Riley feels safe knowing Ethan is watching her front door as she showers. She tries to think about her next move. Maybe I should lay low with this over Ghostface going around. But no, Chad and Mindy need to pay for what they did. And Sam...? She's still unsure about Sam.

She turns the shower off, dismissing how complicated the situation is getting. She dries herself off as much as she can, before stepping out of the shower. She winces at her bruise.

"Ethan?" She calls out.

He half rushes to the door, speaking from the other side and not looking out of respect. "You're good, no Ghostface." He's flustered as Riley steps out of the bathroom, wrapped in her towel.

"Thanks." She walks to her room, Ethan noticing how short the towel is. He watches her figure, almost following her into the bedroom.

"Uh," his eyes looking up from her ass. "Are you sure you're going to be okay?"

Riley opens her towel at the side, revealing half of her breast and that half of her body. She props her leg up, pointing her toe so that her thigh works with the towel to hide her private area.

Ethan is almost flustered again, seeing her practically naked. But his eyes worry when they see the bruise. He's angry that her dad hurt her.

"I'll be okay," Riley answers his question. She looks up at him, her eyes peering through her eyelashes. "Will you stay tonight?"

This look drives Ethan crazy. He feels uncomfortable in his pants, trying to sneak a hand to go fix it. But before he can answer, his phone rings. He checks to see his dad calling. Shit.

He really needs to talk to his dad, but he really wants to stay with Riley. "I'll stay, but this is important. Do you mind if I..?"

She shakes her head. "No, of course not. I'll change while you take that."

Ethan steps out to answer the call. Riley changes into pajamas and plans to better hide the bloody backpack. She's decided to lay low, hiding her list with the backpack deep in her closet.

"Hey," Ethan answers his phone.

"Quinn said that was your little girlfriend at the bodega. She said to not hurt her?"

"I told Riley not to go. I'm trying to keep her out of this."

Wayne scoffs. "If she's in my way, Ethan..." He pauses, and then lets out a frustrated sigh. "Fine, but she better stay out of my way."

Ethan lets out a sigh of relief.

"Ethan, there's another one out there. I want to find them, and gut em' with the Carpenter girls. Do you know who it is?"

Ethan will never give Riley up. "I have no idea who it could be."

"Alright." Wayne dismisses the topic and hangs up.

Ethan takes a deep breath. He's been crushing on Riley since they met, and he finally has her. But will the whole Ghostface thing ruin it?

He returns to Riley in pajamas, in her bed with a movie on. She scoots over, giving him room to join her.

He takes his shoes off before getting in. He's uncomfortable in jeans, but is nervous about whether he should take them off yet or not. He automatically lays beside her, lifting an arm to put around her so she can lay her head on his chest.

Ethan remembers the list he found, and remembers the attitude Riley gave Chad earlier that night. "What's wrong with you and Chad?" He cringes. Good idea, Ethan. First night with your girlfriend and you bring up her ex.

She actually appreciates the question. She only told Mindy about what happened, and Mindy didn't take it very well.

It's not the most fun story to tell, so she pauses for a moment before explaining. "Everyone knows we had sex last semester. But no one knows I said no."

Ethan's posture softens, feeling bad for her. This makes him develop a hate towards Chad.

Riley takes a deep breath. "I told Mindy. For some reason, I thought she would know what to do or how to handle it. But, of course, she denied it. When Jason started rumors that I was easy, she only made them worse. I broke up with him and they eventually dropped it."

She snuggles in closer to Ethan for comfort. He holds her back to assure her. That explains three of the names on her list. What about Sam? He doesn't push too much.

After hearing that story, though, he doesn't want to pressure her into anything. So the image of her in that half-unfolded shower towel will be saved for later.

He waits until she's asleep to get comfortable, taking off his shirt and jeans. He watches her for a moment, admiring her. She's always treated him so nice. He feels so comfortable, so himself, around her. Everything makes sense when he's with her. He embraces her, falling asleep as the big spoon.
