Greta Van Fleet is a rock band from the United States, formed in 2012. The band consists of the Kiszka brothers: twins Josh (vocals) and Jake (guitar), Sam (bass guitar, keyboards), and Danny Wagner (drums). In March 2017, they were signed to a record label and released their debut studio album, "Black Smoke Rising", a month later. Their first single, "Highway Tune", topped the U.S. and Canadian rock charts for four weeks in a row. They released their second EP, "From the Fires", on November 10, 2017, which included the four songs from "Black Smoke Rising" and four new songs, along with a second single, "Safari Song". "From the Fires" won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Their debut full-length studio album, "Anthem of the Peaceful Army", was released on October 19, 2018, and debuted at number one on the Billboard Rock Albums chart. The album's first single, "When the Curtain Falls", was released ahead of the album in July 2018 and became the band's third number-one single on the U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. "Anthem of the Peaceful Army" also debuted atop the Billboard Hard Rock charts and reached the number one spot on the Billboard Top Album Sales charts in the first week after its release.
If you want to check out the band, I've listed the official website at the end of this article.
"There's plenty of love left in this world, even though it may not seem like it, And that's what 'Heat Above' is about, rising to the stars together." Bassist/keyboardist Sam Kiszka said in a press statement.
In my opinion, Heat Above is about love prevailing through dark times, and I think it is a wonderful power ballad filled with incredible vocals and a deep message carried with lots of 70s glam and hippie vibes.
When you look at the lyrics, it is clear that war is a big topic, but when you read closely, despite the melancholy theme, it's also saying that love can always be felt through this.
But song lyrics can be interpreted in different ways, so I'll post the lyrics here as well, so its up for discussion.
Sorrows of the Earth
May our tears of rain wash down to bathe you
This is what life is worth
When the fires still burn and rage all around
Can you hear that dreadful sound?
Fire still burning on the ground
Follow the fearsome sound
As they march to battle, hear the drums pound
We do not fight for war
But to save the lives of those who do so
Can you hear that dreadful sound?
Fire still burning on the ground
Can you feel my love?
Rising with the heat above
Life's the story of
Ascending to the stars as one
Marching across the land
Is a peaceful army joining the band
Walking hand in hand
To an anthem loudly sung where they stand
Can you hear that dreadful sound?
Fire still burning on the ground
La-la-la, la-la-la, la
La-la-la, la-la-la, la
Can you feel my love?
Rising with the heat above
Life's the story of
Ascending to the stars as one
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah
Oh-oh-oh, yeah
Oh-oh-oh-oh rising
Above it, above it
Above, yeah, above, yeah
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
When examining the verses, I saw the line "Ascending to the stars as one." which makes me think about death and the end of life, and that death can be a reprieve for a lot of soldiers fighting on battlefields.
"Can you hear that dreadful sound? Fire still burning on the ground" probably pertains to a battlefield/war zone, but I think it also applies to modern-day society because, let's face it, being in civilisation is bloody hard. Some days, I can't help but compare my week to a never-ending battle, so I think it's a good double entendre.
It's a very meaningful song that deserves much more recognition than it has received.
