Warriors and cherry pies

Sitting on the hard corridor floor in the servant quarters was not how Vidar had imagined spending the night of homecoming. He had expected to have one of the unmated females spread beneath him. But since his beast had no intention of leaving the little human alone for the night, he had settled with setting up camp right next to her room.

Sometimes he wondered if his beast side was really sane.

He hoped that Donahue would have calmed down by the morning and his beast would stop thinking that the little human was in danger. He didn't want to spend too many nights on the floor. He preferred the comforts of a bed.

Trying to find a more comfortable position, Vidar listened to the sounds coming from the little human's room.

Lulu had called her Elizabeth.

A very typical human name.

But still beautiful, like its owner.

Vidar huffed quietly, annoyed with his beast side. Why did he have to take an interest in someone that he shouldn't have?

He should be taking a strong shifter female as first mate and not think about the little human in that way. She was too small, too skittish, too obedient.

Even though his beast particularly liked her obedience.

But his beast was obsessed with control.

Like it was now controlling him.

Sounds of someone sniffling reached Vidar and his ears perked up. He and his beast were alert.

Was the little human crying?

It would be understandable, because she had been through a lot tonight.

But that didn't mean, he liked it.

Hearing her cry made him angry with Donahue. Vidar seldomly disapproved of his alpha's actions. Donahue was a good leader, otherwise Vidar wouldn't be part of this pack. He would rather be packless than serve an arsehole.

Still, Vidar was angry that Donahue had hurt the little human.

Anger and annoyance weren't a good set up for finding sleep, but there wasn't anything he could do about it now.

Hoping that he would get an explanation tomorrow, Vidar closed his eyes, while listening to the little human weeping quietly.

Vidar's night was short. He was too upset and tense to sleep more than a couple of hours. Sitting on the floor didn't invite for a deep slumber either. When he heard movement from the little human's room, he got up quietly and went to the kitchen to get some breakfast. She didn't need to find him lurking outside of her room.

He would probably scare her and he didn't want to do that.

At least on that issue he agreed with his beast.

A few of the females with little pups were already awake as usual and preparing breakfast. Their mates were probably still sleeping. Normally the men wanted to rest for the first day or two after coming home. Guarding the King when he left First City was a time consuming and exhausting job. Everyone needed to be vigilant and ready to defend and attack at any point. Sleep was never deep in the time on the road.

The women greeted Vidar but kept their distance. They knew he wasn't one for chit-chat. The children however have never been deterred by his quietness. Mere seconds after coming into the kitchen, he had a small boy clinging to each of his legs.
