Looking down at him, she let off the most subtle smile as her eyes scanned over his sleeping face. He was flat on his stomach, head tilted her way and hand resting on her hip.
It was still early, only a little before seven but the sun coming through the curtains is what caused her to stir. They had forgotten to shut them in the haste they were in the night before, but other than that, she'd slept so well- the first time in a long time that she didn't toss and turn.
But since he had held her close and rubbed her back, she was more content than she had been in forever. It was always his silent promise to love her through the night that she adored more than anything.
"I'll be back." She whispered, even though he was too far deep in his slumber to hear.
Stevie carefully tossed her legs over the edge of the bed, slipped her silk robe over her shoulders and trailed out of the master bedroom. She figured she had some time before he woke up- she could tell he was still sleeping deeply by the soft snores that filled the room and that gave her some time to call home.
"Hello?" Karen's voice filled the phone after the second ring, surprised to hear from her boss to say the least... She usually didn't get a call until August when it was time for her to head back to California.
"Why are you up so early?" She wondered, a soft smile on her face as she began moving around the kitchen.
There was a little pause on the other end, Karen trying to quickly come up with an excuse before it seemed suspicious. "You woke me." She lied, which she hardly ever did with Stevie... She had good reason though.
"Oh," the older woman frowned softly, holding the phone between her shoulder and her ear as she worked on putting a new filter into the coffee pot. "Well, I can call you back later when I have-"
"No," she cut her off, shifting awkwardly in the center of the hospital waiting room as she stared down at the floor. "What's up? Are you okay?" It was actually kind of a relief to hear from Stevie... it made Karen feel just a little bit better about the situation she was trying to handle.
"I'm good, yeah." She assured, pushing all the wrong buttons before she finally got the machine to start working. "I was just wondering, when you get some free time, will you give the realtor a call?" Stevie creased a brow when she heard a strange buzzing noise on Karen's end. "I want to meet with her soon to get the ball rolling here." She decided not to mention the sound- it probably wasn't her business what was going on anyway.
Karen nodded lightly, rubbing her tired eyes as a gentle sigh escaped her. "I'll handle it, yeah." She assured as a set of thick tears lingered in her eyes.
Something about talking to Stevie is what caused the emotion to hit her... She would know what to do and she felt so awful not telling her what was happening.
"Honey?" Stevie could hear it in the younger woman's voice. "Is everything okay?" She repeated, creasing a brow gently.
"Everything's fine and I'll talk to you in a few days." She let out a dry chuckle, trying her best to make her boss feel a little bit better before they ended the conversation.
"Okay..." she wasn't sure, but she had to take her word for it. "Bye, sweet girl." Stevie added before she pulled the phone away from her ear.
She thought about it for a moment as she poured the hot coffee into two mugs, trying to remember the last time she'd heard Karen cry... She couldn't decide if her assistant was just really tired, or upset over something.
Either way, there wasn't much she could do when she was that far away, so she decided that she was going to call later to check up on her. But until then, she set her phone down on the counter, grabbed their cups off the marble and headed back down the hallway.
"There you are." He was sitting up in bed by then, leaning back against the headboard and watching her trail towards the bed.
She gave him a weak smile, holding out both cups so she could climb into the safety of the old blankets. "Good morning..." Stevie didn't hesitate to curl into his side, a gentle sigh filling the quiet morning air around them when he draped an arm over her shoulders.
"Good morning, pretty woman." He pressed his lips to her temple, so happy to be that close to her.
She carefully took a sip of her drink as she cracked a faint smile. "Sleep okay?" She wondered, turning her head softly to stare over at him.
He nodded, index finger drawing small circles on her bare shoulder. "So good." Lindsey gave her a gentle wink, which caused a deep laugh to fill the air. "Did you?" He wondered as his eyes scanned over her face.
"I did..." she lingered, biting down on her lower lip lightly. "In fact, I slept so well, I don't think I wanna get out of bed today." She smirked when his eyes lit up a little.
"I like the sound of that." He assured, kissing the side of her head a couple more times, which sent loud laughs echoing through the small house.
