The next morning Katie went to practice a little earlier than usual because she wanted to make sure that she was there before Caitlin. The only other person in the locker room was Leah, "McCabe you are here early today"
"Just wanted to get out of the house I guess," Katie said because she didn't want to admit she was here if Caitlin needed her as she didn't know if Leah knew about the breakup.
"Is everything okay with you and Ruesha?" "Oh yeah didn't mean to give that impression."
Leah gave her a look, but Katie ignored her and started to get changed. They were fine. Right?
Before she could overthink too much Lia walked in with puffy eyes and looked like she got no sleep. She walked straight to Leah who handed her a coffee.
"Thanks Lee"
"No worries. Figured you need it."
So Leah knows. Of course she does, Leah and Lia were great friends. Katie didn't want to make it awkward but she could sense Lia needed a second alone. She acted oblivious to the situation, "hey girls I'm going to grab and a few snacks. Either of you want anything?"
Lia shook her head and Leah answered for both of them that they were good. Katie's timing was incredible and she walked out and ran right into a very drained looking Aussie.
"Come with me"
"Why"
"Because the only people in there are Leah and Lia and I don't think you want to be in there."
"Oh yeah okay." Caitlin said as her face dropped realizing a few days ago this wouldn't have been a problem. And the thought of Lia alone in a locker room brought back memories that she didn't want to share with Katie. They finally made it around the corner where Katie abruptly stopped and grabbed Caitlin into a hug similar to that of last night. Caitlin felt herself relax again and kept her eyes closed.
"You're going to be okay. Day by day and I'll help you every step of the way." For fear of tears coming out Caitlin didn't speak just shook her head and let Katie hold her. By the time they got snacks and headed back other people were there. There was enough noise that no one noticed the hurt glance between the newly exes. No one noticed Lia abruptly standing up and walking out and no one noticed Caitlin's deep breath and pressing her head against her locker trying to stay calm.
Practice went relatively well. A few of the girls seem to notice something was up but not enough to bring it up. The next day was a similar chain of events except after practice Caitlin if she needed to talk to Lia.
She needed this awkwardness to end. She also needed her clothes back because she had only grabbed a few things when she left a few nights ago. She also knew that Lia was going to try and run off again as soon as Jonas ended practice for the day. As soon as he finished his speech, Caitlin ran straight to Lia who is leading the pack back to the locker room.
"Hi"
"What do you want Cait"
"I don't want to fight. I just wanted to see if it's okay if I come over later and grab the rest of my clothes. We can talk if you want. If not I'll be there at 3 I won't be mad if you want to leave instead. I'll just leave my key on the table. I don't want to upset you more."
"Okay" was all Lia said and she sped up to get past her ex.
"Okay?" Caitlin whispered as she stopped walking standing there completely confused.
Was the okay to her not going to be there or to her want to talk or what?!
Before her overthinking continued, Katie slipped her hand around her shoulders to keep her moving forward. "You alright?l"
"No. I mean I don't know. I'm confused. I'm going to pick my stuff up at 3. Want to get dinner later? Jordan has an away game and I don't think I'll want to be alone tonight."
"Rue is gone too so that works for me. Let me know how it goes."
