With one last glance at his phone, Amani stowed the device in the inside pocket of his body suit, sealing the pocket tightly and checking for tears. Satisfied, he ran his fingers through his long, wavy caramel-colored hair and tied the strands in a tight ponytail. Amani pressed scent blockers to his neck, over his glands where his scent would be strongest, before pulling the hood of his body suit up and tucking any loose strands of hair into the tight-fitting shadowy material.
Checking himself in the mirror of his hotel room, Amani admired the way the material clung to his lithe body and yet obscured his features. Probably one of the best purchase decisions he'd ever made, the umbral suit used his own innate magic to power the enchanted garment. The enchantments made him near undetectable to the current technology and magic security.
Honestly, all those systems proved nothing more than a money pit. Anyone who thought they could keep him out with a bit of high tech magical security needed to come back to reality.
With one last look at his bright silver eyes, Amani tugged the front of the hood down and pressed the edges to his neck. He ran his fingers across where the material met, sealing it firmly until it became a seamless piece of fabric. When he looked back into the mirror, his entire body seemed to shift and twist in a shadowy mist.
Turning on his heel, Amani headed for the enormous windows overlooking the sprawling, lit nighttime cityscape. Buildings towered and reached for the skies high above, wishing they too could soar through the clouds like the floating island cities. One of those island cities hovered above the metropolitan city of Baydi, one of the largest cities on the surface.
But Tashand, up above? The elite of the elite lived on that floating island high above. Creatures of immense magic, great wealth, and greater power ruled from the floating islands and Tashand remained at the pinnacle, taunting the surface dwellers with its mere presence. Tashand hovered close to the surface in order to take on servants, workers, and other menial laborers, as well as receive deliveries for their residents. Many island dwellers took the opportunity to "vacation" on the surface.
As if looking at the poor and unfortunate masses of surface dwellers struggling to live was some form of entertainment.
Unfortunately for those elites, Amani planned to take full advantage of the opportunity presented to him and his line of work.
Amani tapped a panel on the wall, dismissing the window. The sudden influx of wind nearly knocked him back, but Amani braced for it. The umbral suit tightened around his limbs and Amani quickly swung out onto the side of the building. The enchantments on his suit sunk talons of solidified blackness into the face of the building. With a thought, Amani sent a tendril of shadow to press the window panel, calling the window back into place.
Pressing close to the sheer metal sides, Amani scaled the building to the dizzying high roof. Once on top, Amani took several moments to catch his breath. Then he turned his eyes up to the floating island.
While the hotel reached well over 100 floors, the floating island mocked the skyscrapers, still high above.
The higher they are, the farther they fall, Amani thought with a smirk. Taking a deep breath, he let his power swell within him. Slowly, he fed the magic to the enchantments on his back. Huge feathery wings of raven black sprouted from the suit, sucking up his magic greedily.
Knowing he couldn't keep the enchantment powered for long with how much magic it required, Amani ran, leapt, and spread his wings. He'd practiced long and hard with the wings, and beat hard against the high winds. Even still, he found himself tossed about in air currents. Narrowly managing to keep his concentration and avoid plummeting to his untimely death, Amani flew higher and higher until, sweating with the effort, Amani tumbled onto the ground of the floating island. He rolled, the wings cushioning him for only a fraction of a second before they disappeared as he dismissed the enchantment.
