"Oh, so witches and werewolves are real, but there's no way ghosts can be, huh?" Daryl ribbed. He tore off a piece of chocolate and placed it exactly in the center of the graham cracker before continuing, "Is that why we can't seem to scare you at all?"

Arkas shrugged and handed the scholar a marshmallow. "I don't believe in ghosts. Spirits, yes. Ghosts that haunt people and hurt them? No. With everything I've seen and been through, you'd think I'd seen it all."

Wiping his hands on his short-shorts, Jess snorted. "Trust me, you have not seen it all. Just because your boy toy is a werewolf, doesn't make you an expert. Why don't you ask your teacher? I'm sure Sam's seen a ghost or five. And what about that psychopomp that's been hanging around Sam? He's probably sent several ghosts through the veil."

"They've been busy," Arkas muttered, tugging his leather jacket tighter around his shoulders. Even with the fire in front of them, the October chill in the mountains crept in.

"And what, Sam doesn't have a phone?" Daryl shook his head and tested the golden marshmallow before putting it back over the fire. "What hottie her age doesn't have a phone? It's the twenty-first century, for Einstein's sake!"

Jess rolled bright blue eyes and leaned back from the fire, turning his head to the stars high above the canopy. "I'd love to see you say that to Sam. Really, I'd pay to see that."

"Hell no, I don't need her cursing me or turning me into a frog!"

"She's got a phone, you know she does. She's in the group chat, and I will tell her what you said," Arkas snorted as he built his own s'mores, stabbing a marshmallow with a stick. "And I'll have you know, Sam doesn't do that kind of thing. That's just an unfounded rumor."

"Like ghosts?"

"Exactly like ghosts!" Arkas grinned at Daryl, ignoring the exasperated look.

Daryl shook his head again and crunched into his s'mores. The gooey mess oozed over his fingers, and the brunette was all too happy to lick his fingers clean.

"Man, when was the last time we did this?" Daryl asked, reaching for the chocolate and crackers again.

"At least four or five summers ago," Jess said, sitting up again. "Before we graduated, definitely. Before this jerk went and got a boyfriend."

Arkas flushed hotly, shooting a look at Jess. "Can we stop bringing that up?"

"I'm just putting things onto the timeline for us singles," Jess said with a smirk on his vulpine features. "Some of us have to carry on the single forever flag."

"What about Mathias? I thought you liked him," Arkas asked, returning the smirk.

"Oh, no, no, no! I do not like that hot-headed werewolf!" The very thought made Jess hiss and bare his fangs. "No, thank you! I do not need to get involved in pack politics. I hear enough about it from you, and your boy toy isn't even the pack leader."

Arkas shrugged. "You and Mathias were giving each other bedroom eyes last we were all together."

"You're seeing things. In fact, you're blind and in denial. Ghosts are real, and I do not have a thing for Mathias."

Daryl turned from his new marshmallow to glance between Arkas and Jess. After a moment, Daryl laughed and pulled his marshmallow from the fire. "Man, I've got a horse in both those races... Ghosts are real, and from the blush on your cheeks and firm denial, you totally have a thing for this Mathias guy."
