A week after Mickey was rescued, the big June wedding for seven of the couples was held. They were all gone for a week on a cruise that they had gotten a really good group rate on. Digger, Stephanie, Doc, Melinda, Ace, Dot, Tank, Nicole, Wheels, April, Scar, Cinder, Spokes and Heather all tied the knot on the second Saturday of June.
Andy made his special chicken and Bubba created a beautiful 7 tier cake for them that was actually 7 individual round cakes that he artfully stacked so that each couple felt like they had their own cake to cut. For all of them, the cruise they had gone on seemed to be over much too quickly but thankfully it had been fairly quiet at the clubhouse while they had been gone.
Unfortunately, the club's luck on getting through the summer without having any rescues ran out a few days after they returned.
As always seemed to happen, when one rescue came in, it seemed to open the door for others. Schools had closed for the summer and kids were soon getting on their parents' nerves. Thankfully, so far, they were not getting calls for the very young children. They did, however, get several calls for older kids.
The first one was when Inker found a kindred spirit in a boy he helped to rescue by the name of Douglas. His mother's name was Sylvia and she was an alcoholic with a temper who felt that her son was a burden.
Prez was actually surprised when Inker called him to say he had a boy who was being beaten up in front of his shop. Prez only stopped for a second to wonder why Inker wasn't just taking care of this one on his own until he remembered how he had heard that Inker had become part of the club.
Inker had just gotten back to the shop, having gone to the diner for some food for his dinner. He'd parked his bike in his space behind the shop and let himself in. He'd just thought to himself that he was getting into a rut lately as he headed for the front of his shop to sit and watch TV while he ate and waited for his next client to come in. They were supposed to be finishing off his full back tattoo tonight.
He'd been feeling kind of sorry for himself today because even though he liked an orderly lifestyle, his life seemed to be becoming so orderly that it was downright BORING and he hated to admit it but he was lonely!
Inker noticed the kid that he had seen checking out the drawings that Inker displayed in his front window several times over the past couple of months. Inker saw him pull up and park to begin his nightly wait for his mother to come out of the bar across the street. She was never nice to the kid, usually yelling and screaming at him, but Inker had never seen her lift her hand to him before.
As he sat down at the front counter, he started to eat as Inker watched the two of them for a few minutes. He saw the kid get out of the beat up old pickup truck to help her up after she had fallen down because she was so drunk that she could barely stand up.
Inker had seen her a few times, leaving the bar with different men and remembered that the first time he had spotted her. The man she had been with had been basically holding her up because she was too drunk to walk on her own. Inker had been slightly concerned about her but then an Uber had pulled up and the man had poured her into it and went back into the bar alone.
Since that night, Inker had seen the boy parked across the street, waiting for her to come out of the bar, often late into the night, even on school nights.
The boy always had on ratty looking clothes that seemed to be a bit too small for him. He just ducked under her swinging arms as she tried to hit out at him, without letting her fall over. It looked to Inker like this was a dance they had danced often in the past and he felt heart sore for the kid as it began to bring back memories of his own childhood.
