Adam

I was nine years old when they came for us.

I don't know why or how, but my mom had always told me that one day I might be on my own after she was gone.

It was just my mom and me up until that point - my mom said that my dad left us when I was still a baby. I don't remember much about him, but my mom said I had his eyes.

We lived in a house on the coast or New Brunswick, near Hopewell Cape, in Canada. There was always a lot of rain - torrential downpours referred to as 'Noreasters' I think. It was also home to the largest tides known on earth, my mom said. The house was small but comfortable, from what I remember. I try to hold onto these memories, since they're all I have left.

Why, you ask? Well, I'll tell you.

One day, and don't ask me which because I don't remember anymore, they came for us. Just like she said.

It was at night. My mom was in the living room when the knock came. I was in my room, doing some homework for school, when I heard her scream. I was terrified. I rushed down the stairs only to find three men holding my mom down, and another by the door. He was holding an object - a simple wooden pendant with some sort of carving on it.

Then he spoke.

"You should not have run from us," he said. "It will only ma-" and that's when he saw me.

"No, this cannot be," he said. The others turned their heads towards me. I felt a power radiating from them and stepped back up the stair.

"Adam, run!" Screamed my mom, with wide eyes.

One of the men let go of her and came over to me. I couldn't move. He grabbed my arm tightly and pulled me down the stairs.

"So, what are we to do with this one?" He asked the man by the door. The others looked to him as well.

"We will have to hide him," he replied. "We will bind him to the bay until he is safe."

"No!" Cried my mother. "Please, you cant! Just kill me and leave him." Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Not possible," said the man by the door. Then he turned to me and my captor. "Take the boy to the beach and bind him. Make sure to use the spell of concealment. We will come for him when he is ready."

The man holding me nodded and pulled me across the living room towards the door.

"Please, he's only a child," said my mom. "He doesn't know anything, don't do this."

I looked back and saw her beautiful tear-stainted face, then something compelled me to move forward. I never saw her again.

We walked down to the beach. No one seemed to see us, or care where this man was taking me. I couldn't control my body - it just moved at the man's pace, walking.

We finally arrived at the beach, the one with the large tides, and he said: "We are here. Now, I'm sorry to have to do this, but there is no other choice."

I could move again. "Why are you doing this to us? Let us go, we didn't do anything wrong!" I told him.

"This is for your own good," he said. Then he pushed me into the water.

It was shallow, so it's not like I was worried at all, but the water was freezing. I came up for air, and that's when I heard him chanting. It wasn't in any language I recognized, but the words had a power I could feel.

I started to feel woozy, and my body felt weird. The next thing I knew, I was laying down in the shallow water. I lifted my head. The man was still there but he wasn't looking at me, only towards the sea.

Then he said: "You are now protected by a concealment spell. This water line is your safe haven, yet you will be able to set foot upon the beach. But, no one will be able to see, hear or feel you."

I was really confused - what was this man saying?

"When we return, you will be ready," said the man. He turned around and walked away.

I couldn't comprehend what he was saying, so I got up to follow him. I took a few steps out of the ocean, a few feet out and stopped dead. It was like there was an invisible wall holding me back. I pounded it with my fist, but that didn't work. I yelled and screamed at him to come back, but it was futile. I watched him walk over a dune and disappear.

I stayed there for what seemed like hours, but I could have only been minutes, when I felt something. The wall was pushing me back!

I stumbled and fell into the surf. And I remembered his words. The water line. It was receding ever slowly.

I was stuck.

It was the next day before I saw anyone else. I hadn't slept all night, following the in and out of the tide. I figured I could go about three feet out of the water before the wall stopped me.

The boy came running down the sand. I yelled: "Hey! Over here."

The boy didn't seem to notice me, and that's when he came barreling right at me. I jumped out of the way.

"Hey, what's your problem!" I yelled at him. He just ignored me and continued running down the beach. And then something horrifying happened.

His mom, or who I assume was his mom, passed right through me from behind and went after him. I was so surprised I fell down in the water. I made a splash, but the lady didn't seem to notice. And that's when it dawned on me.

What the man said was true. They couldn't see, hear or feel me there.

I sat there until the tide went up to my shoulder, and cried. I was alone.

***

Eight years later, from what I can tell, and I'm still here. I've grown up a bit, I'm taller and have my hair very long, since there is no one to cut it. I can feel the stubble of a beard growing on my face. And I'm still alone with my curse.

I was lost and miserable for eight whole years, watching, waiting for someone to save me from this.

And then she came.

Alright, this is just the preface kinda thingy, it's the main idea I had.

If anyone is reading this let me know if its good or not and if I should write more.

I have a couple other good ideas in the works, and since this is my first story, I figure I should just see how it goes...

So yeah, cheerio for now. :)
