Before we begin just a quick note, please do not skip as it will be useful:
Obviously this world for the book not only has some differences from the Twilight universe but also the normal one that we live in.
For starters: Soulmates
Soulmates in this story are a vampirical concept designed to make eternity bearable. Your soulmate is meant to be your perfect companion, which means there is no prejudice regarding the bond with race, gender, age (more on that in a second) and number of partners.
Age, you might be thinking "Oh no! Not Jacob and Renesmee again!" But it's not that. For instance your soulmate could be 100 years old and you 18 (I'm looking at you Edward and Bella), but you will not meet until the right moment. So although your soulmate may live nearby when they're a baby and you're old old, you will not meet them until you're both ready (emotional or physical maturity wise).
Indication of you having a soulmate arises after both of you have changed. Until you meet the person you get a feeling of something pulling you in the direction of where your soulmate is. Humans, nor vampires with human soulmates will feel this pull as you shouldn't be dating prey, besides you are destined to meet them at the right moment anyway so no matter how much you follow the pull it is only when fate decides that you will meet.
When you finally do meet your soulmate, and your eyes meet, a mark forms on your arm. Black and identical to your soulmate's, for people with more than one soulmate this means more than one mark. Not only this but so you can never be mistaken something in your heart - the very feeling that was pulling you towards them - lets you know that it is them.
Soulmate bonds do not influence your feelings in a way that makes "I want you to be happy because you're my soulmate" a valid excuse. In fact you want them to be happy because they are a wonderful person you have fallen in love with, so really the soulmate bond is more of a giant red sign that says "THIS PERSON IS AMAZING, YOU'RE AMAZING, SO TOGETHER YOU'LL NEVER BE SAD". Like Tinder only it never gets it wrong and you always have your perfect match.
Having said this it means that getting out of a soulmate bond isn't too hard. It's not like the bond ever breaks, even in death. You only go your separate ways where seeing each other is like coming across that one ex that you absolutely fell head over heels for but it ended catastrophically and you're in that permanent place of not getting over it. Is it better than physical pain? Probably not but it technically isn't forcing you to get back together and you can date other people.
Although many vampires consider the bond sacred and don't dare date another person until they've found their soulmate, even frown upon others who do so. It is mostly because of these vampires that leaving a soulmate bond can be more difficult. Peer pressure, ey?
Second of all: aʃaɸ
aʃaɸ (a-sh-a-f) is a completely made up country that the main character rules, it is an island between Italy and Spain (a bit like Majorca). This country has it's own history, customs, deities, tribes, dialects and languages.
I use phonetic letter when writing their language, but it also has a complicated grammar system that means I'll just put translations if I ever write in it (which will be when there's a character in a scene that's not meant to understand what's being said). Though the language and separate dialects will be mentioned. Names I'll write in English letter for the ease of the reader but the first time they are seen in the story it will be using the language.
The language does have a grammar system and a method to it all which I could go into for days about but I will not bore you (I literally have pages and pages written on the history of it, how dialects branch off, etymology of words and phrases, where things are used etc.).
