Over the next few weeks, Sophie avoided Fitz as much as possible. She even ditched multiple telepathy sessions even though that was her generally favorite class. She was NOT going to cave in and start crying or break down in front of Fitz. She knew that it hurt to lose that friendship but she wouldn't deal with it anymore if it hurt her and her friends.

She had been sitting with Biana, Keefe, and Dex at lunch and study hall. Sophie was just glad that her relationship with Fitz hadn't affected her friendship with Biana.

That morning at orientation, Magnete Leto, had a special announcement. "Good morning Foxfire students! To celebrate our third anual noxflare festival, we are hosting a required dance!" He paused for effect before he continued. "Because the festival only occurs when the noxflares bloom, we decided that we are going to host a dance for foxfire students level four and above if you are below level four and are asked, you are able to attend. Just keep in mind that the dance is in one month and all of you students will get heart necklaces with your names on them to give to your date to the dance. Have a great day students!"

When Sophie got to her locker, she saw a heart with her name on it and grudgingly put it on along with everyone else. Her heart was gold with her name on it in cursive. Biana's was teal with violet lettering. Sophie remembered her favorite color... "Sophie?" Sophie immediately grew angry at that voice but tried to keep her cool as she turned around. She faced Fitz with icily cold eyes. "I just want to say that I've thought of what happened between us and what I said, and I realized that I am in the wrong." Sophie reeled on him. "It took you three weeks to finally figure out you were in the wrong!?" Sophie asked disbelieving. "Unless you have something better to say than that, I would leave now." His heart was teal with golden letters. "Do you want to go to the dance with me?" Fitz asked. Sophie looked at him wondering how she ever felt the way she did about him. He was disgusting. "No! I am done with you! You may think that the 'apology' you just gave me was good, but I think that a genetic freak like me would know better."

Fitz stalked off and Sophie turned around to see Keefe. He looked at her with a look of respect in his eyes. His heart was ice blue with navy blue lettering. "Are we still on for tutoring tonight?" She asked him. "Y-y-yes." Keefe said seeming to snap back into reality. How had she just been so strong? She was probably invincible.

That night, Keefe met Sophie in the pastures. Keefe was wearing a navy blue tunic and and grey pants. Sophie was wearing a red tunic with red lace sleeves and black leggings. "Is it okay if we go somewhere different tonight? We can practice as we walk there." Sophie said nervously. Keefe agreed. He was feeling something different about Sophie. A different emotion. One that he had never felt off of anybody before... he just shrugged it off and walked beside her. She seemed more at ease tonight than she had in a while.

As they were walking, Sophie started the conversation. "I'm sorry you had to listen to the argument Fitz and I had today." Sophie hesitated before she added, it just made me mad that he thought he could brush off an apology like that..." "I understand Foster, you don't have to explain." Keefe paused before saying, "if it were me, I would have slapped him too." Sophie laughed, but it seemed like her mind was elsewhere. What I would give to be a telepath and know what Sophie is thinking right now... Keefe thought. I wish I were an empath right now and could feel his emotions...does he feel the same way? Sophie had talked to Biana earlier and told her that she realized that she had feelings for Keefe. Biana had squealed and told her to offer Keefe her heart after they did their session.

Once They reached the clearing Sophie had found earlier, she walked in with Keefe close behind. He gasped when he walked in. The leaves hung over branches like gossamer lace, the toadstools glowed cool colors, and created a romantic scenery.

"Sophie..?" When Sophie turned around, Keefe looked like he really wanted to tell her something important. "I just wanted to let you know that if you need anyone to talk to, I will always be there for you." Sophie smiled and put her heart back in its pocket. She needed to work on their friendships before she started to 'date' again.
