Sophie's POV
Sophie's last class was with Lady Cadence her polyglot mentor. When she got there, she sat down and looked at Lady Cadence with a newfound admiration. Her mentor had shown her time and again that though she was strict, she was also a kind hearted elf at heart.
They had to work on Sophie's mimicking. "Repeat after me, My name is Lady Cadence and I am the best polyglot teacher." "Repeat after me, My name is Lady Cadence and I am the best polyglot teacher." Sophie repeated with a slight smirk even though she sounded like she just spoke through a rusty pipe. "You've gotten worse over break I see." Said the mentor. "Sophie grew red from being called out.
After her session, Sophie sat on a bench holding her head in her hands. "Geez what happened Foster?" Sophie looked up to find Keefe staring at her worry in his eyes. Sophie sighed and patted the seat next to her. "It's a long story." Keefe sat down as Sophie explained that she was going to desperately need a tutor to catch up by midterm. And how she didn't know who would help her that wasn't already busy with some 'big project.'
When she looked at him, he looked like he was having a major internal conflict with himself. When he looked at her he said, "if you want...I can tutor you?" He said it like a question but when she looked up at him, her eyes danced with excitement. "Seriously? Do you mean that?" Sophie's voice was filled to much with hope that Keefe relaxed and agreed. "Thank you SO much! Are you free after school?" Keefe said yes and they both went to study hall.
After school, Keefe met Sophie out by Calla's panakes tree. When they sat down, Keefe showed her some exercises to help her embody the voice she was mimicking. "You need to embody their personality if that makes sense. For beginners, you need to need to have a strong connection with that person to be able to mimic them. Deeper than the surface." Keefe instructed. "This exercise can tell you something about someone that even they don't know. It's almost like human acting. If you're in the role of someone you already know very well, you could find something out about them that you never knew before." Keefe warned. "Ok.." Sophie said slowly.
"Why don't you start with someone you know really well?" Keefe suggested. "Ok.." Sophie said again, "like who?" "How about Fitz?" Sophie blushed at the name. "What do you want me to say?" "How about something along the lines of my name is Fitz Vacker and I have the most amazing best friend." Keefe joked. "My name is Fitz and I have the most annoying best friend." Sophie tried but it sounded wrong. Almost angry.
That night, Sophie could only lay wide awake staring at her ceiling. She kept replaying Keefe's words in her head. 'You need to have a strong connection to that person to be able to mimic them. Did she really not have the strong connection with him that she thought she did? Was that how she viewed Fitz? Angry and shallow? She put them in a mental box in her mind and told herself to worry about it later.
The next morning at school, Fitz greeted her at orientation with a smile and offered his hand. She took it gratefully and was glad she had someone to hold onto. She was also secretly thankful that Fitz wasn't an empath who could read her emotions like Keefe could or by physical touch.
As she went to her telepathy session with Fitz—why today? Sophie silently cursed— she was hoping she wouldn't need to do another trust exercise. Especially after yesterday.
As it turned out, Tiergan was on a secret assignment from the council and Fitz and Sophie were dismissed from his class. Sophie nearly sighed of relief but remembered that Fitz was still standing right beside her. Holding her hand. "I'm just going to go to study hall then." Said Sophie. She saw the look of hurt on Fitz's face but had to get away. She couldn't stand this. She could tell it probably wouldn't last much longer between them if she didn't open up, but first she had to talk to Keefe. He would give her the reassurance she needed.
Sophie was going to start heading out to the gardens instead and clear her head a little bit when she heard a throat clear behind her. "What's with all of the vomity vibes Foster?" He fanned the air like he might be sick too. Sophie nearly just broke down then and there. She had to get outside.
Sophie sprinted toward the exit like her life depended on it. She couldn't break down now. She was too strong for that. At least, she hoped she was. When she got out to the clearing behind the garden she sat down and cried harder than she had ever cried before.
About three minutes later, she heard someone coming. Sophie scooted farther back into the shade to try and hide at least a little. When she saw a hand lifting up a vine to look through, she saw Keefe with a worried expression on his face. When he saw her he softened a little. He lifted up the vine and walked over to her a little cautious at first to see if she would react. He just sat down by her and wrapped her in a hug. "Sophie, I promise everything will be okay." He waited for her to settle down a bit before he let go of her, and she realized how drained she was from her lack of sleep the night before.
She looked at him closely for the first time in almost two months and realized that he had changed. His hair was more natural now than when it had been and had some soft waves in it. He had grown taller so he was probably a head above her now, and his eyes had changed too.. but she couldn't place how or why.
She wrapped him in a hug and thanked him for helping her. As she started to pull away, she heard a voice behind her. "Sophie? Is that why you ditched me in the hallway? To go off and snuggle with my best friend?" Keefe winced at the words best friend but didn't correct him. Sophie just stared at her hands wondering why the terrible things always happened to her.
