Since it was Saturday me and the guys walked through town. Well, everyone except Darry. It made me sad for him when we'd ask if he wanted go out and he'd say something like, "Sorry I have to work." or "Can't. I'm busy." I could tell he wanted to go with us but couldn't.
As we were walking, Steve, Two-bit and Pony were talking and Soda and I drifted to the back to walk along side each other.
"Hey." I said kind of awkwardly. "Hey." He said back. I looked up at him and he smiled. When he smiled, I couldn't help but crack a grin. His eyes danced and his smile lit up his face.
I looked down hurriedly and focused on my shoes. I felt that if I looked at him for to long, I'd melt on the spot.
I was working up the courage to talk to Soda when Pony jogged back and said, "Y'all okay? You guys are awfully quiet." I looked at Soda and he looked at Pony. "Yeah, we are okay kid." He said as he messed with Pony's hair.
"What do y'all wanna do? I'm bored just walking around doing nothing." Two-bit complained. "Why don't we go to Dairy Queen?" I suggested. "Nah I ain't hungry. Football?" Steve said. "Can't." I said looking at my broken arm. "You don't have to play." He said. "But I want to." I replied. He sighed dramatically.
"Why don't we go to the movie house?" Pony said. Even though none of us felt like watching a movie, we realized it was either that or go home so we agreed.
It was hard to sneak into the movie house. It's easier at the drive in. We decided that we'd just pay our way in and not risk getting kicked out.
Pony offered to get popcorn and Two-bit went with him. The three of us found our seats and we waited for the movie to start.
"Why are we here again?" Steve asked in an annoyed tone. "We got nothing better to do." Soda replied. Two-bit and Pony came back with the popcorn and cokes.
The movie started and we got quiet. It was some cheesy movie that was meant for kids. I looked around and even Pony was bored by the movie.
Soda was playing with his fingers, Two-bit was busy throwing popcorn at the guy with a lot of hair in front of him, Steve was yawning and looking everywhere but the screen, and Pony was bouncing his leg up and down making enough noise for the lady in front of us to shush him. Even in the dark I could see his face get red.I was pretty bored myself. I hadn't even noticed I was looking at Soda until he looked up at me and said, "Did I cut myself shaving?" I blushed and shook my head. "No. You look great." I said. "Oh really?" He said with a a mischievous smile and a failed attempt to cock an eyebrow. I giggled and looked at the rest of the guys.
I looked just in time for Two-bit to miss his target with his popcorn and hit the guy in the ear. The guy must've been dozing off because he jumped and said, "I didn't do it!" We all burst out laughing and the guy got real mad. Everyone turned to look at us and we were asked to leave.
We laughed the whole way home. Everyone except Pony. "Man that was awesome!" Two-bit said with the biggest grin I've ever seen. "That was pretty good." I agreed wiping the corner of my eye as my laughter died down.
Soda, Two-bit, and Steve were still laughing when Pony said, "Everyone was staring at us." We all looked at him and I said, "Let them stare. I bet they've done things like that. If they don't wanna laugh with us, that's their loss." I put him in a headlock with my good arm.
"Lay off!" He said as he smiled a bit. I was happy I made him smile. "You're and okay kid. But let me tell you something Ponyboy Curtis. No matter how many broken bones I have, I will always beat you in a fight." I said proudly. "You will not. I can beat you in a heartbeat." He replied. "Let's find out." I said jokingly. "If I did, Darry would beat my head in." He said and we all laughed again.
