A few days had passed and Pony stayed the same. He was constantly sleeping and when he wasn't, he would just say he's cold or hot. He had to force him to eat and drink water. The doctor said that the good thing is that he wasn't getting any worse. The bad part was he wasn't getting any better.
The doctor was finally letting us spend the night with Pony so Darry and Soda took turns alternating each night. I could tell they were getting tired and I offered to stay so they could sleep but they both said no. Finally when I saw Soda trip over his feet twice and Darry spill his coffee all over him for the third time, I had enough.
"Ok that's it." I said after Soda had just tripped again in Pony's room. They both looked at me with the same dark, tired eyes. "I'm spending the night here tonight and I don't care what either of you say. You both need sleep and it clearly shows.
Darry sighed, "Eliza, I already said no. We can do it. We are fine." I shook my head. "No you are not. I already told you I'm not taking no for an answer." I said. Soda smiled and walked over to me. He gave me a hug and whispered, "Thank you."
He stood up and said, "Darry we might as well. We've been so tired that even if Pony did need us we'd be to tired to help him. It's getting late. Two-bit and Steve already left. Why don't we go home and try to get some sleep? Eliza can stay with him."
I nodded and Darry sighed. I knew that he couldn't object. "Alright. Promise you'll call if anything happens?" He said. "I will okay? Go home and get some sleep, please." I said. He grin his rare grins and nodded as he grabbed his things.
Soda grabbed my hand and said, "Thank you so much. I'll be here tomorrow morning. Early. I'm not going to work tomorrow. I'll see you then." He leaned over and kissed me goodbye. Then Darry and Soda left the room.
I reached into Pony's backpack and pulled out a book. I laid out on the big couch and read for a long time. At around ten thirty or so, a nurse came in to check Pony's blood pressure and stuff and when she saw me reading, she smiled and asked, "Sweetheart are you going to read all night?"
I looked up in confusion. "I just started. It's eight thirty right?" I asked. She laughed and said, "It's actually ten thirty sweetie." I looked at the clock in surprise. "Wow. I had no idea." I said. She smiled and reached into a bag she brought with her. "Here. I brought you a blanket and a pillow." She said as she handed them to me. "Thank you Ms..." I looked at her name tag. "Ms. Hinton. Thank you." She nodded and check Ponyboy over.
"Goodnight honey. Don't stay up to late reading." She said as she shut the door. I figured I'd put the book down and go to bed. I put it away and got as comfortable as I could on the sofa. I went to sleep as soon as my eyes closed but, I wouldn't sleep for long.
I woke up to someone screaming. Screaming like they were running from death itself. I jumped up and rushed over to Pony. He had a nightmare.
"Hey. Hey Ponyboy it's okay. I promise it was just a nightmare." I said as he trembled. "It's me. Eliza. Are you okay?" I asked. He looked at me with fear in his eyes. "I'm in the hospital right?" He asked with a shaky voice. I nodded my head as I walked over the the lamp and switched it on.
"How do you feel?" I asked. He thought about this as if I had just asked him to solve a difficult math problem. "I think I feel better. The last few days have been all mixed up. How long have I been here?" He asked. "About three or four days. Im not really sure." I said. He nodded as he took deep breaths.
"Lie down." I said. He slowly eased himself back down and he shut his eyes. "I never know what is it that scares me so much." He said with his eyes still closed. I sighed as I sat back down on my sofa. Then, he said something that surprised me. "I heard you and Soda arguing. I'm not sure when. Does he really want to go to war?" He asked. I bit my lip as I remembered the argument he was talking about.
It was about a day or two ago and it was just me and Soda with Pony. Soda made some remark about going to war and I got frustrated that he still was talking about that. We started arguing back and forth about it until Two-bit and Steve came in and we both stopped. I had no idea Pony was awake.
"I think... I.. think you should go to sleep. You need rest." I said quietly. "Rest is all that I have gotten for the part four days!" He snapped. I looked at him and he continued, "Promise me something Eliza. Don't let Soda go. He will listen to you. Please don't let him go." He sounded like he was holding back tears.
"I promise I'll try my best." I said. That seemed to satisfy him and he closed his eyes again and fell back asleep. I walked over and turned the lamp back off. I tried to think of the fact that Pony was up and talking. I tried to think of the fact that he was feeling a little bit better. I couldn't. All I could think of was Soda wanting so badly to go to war.
I had a nightmare that night to when I went back to bed. I dreamt of Soda. He was in a military uniform and he was out in Vietnam. His face was covered in mud and I could barely recognize him. I knew it was him because of his eyes. Those big round eyes staring right at me through all the dirt and mud that coated his face.
Then, he ran away from me. He ran past me and into combat in what looked like a small town. He ran around firing his gun and I followed him. Then all of a sudden I was frozen. Stuck to the floor as he ran into a building. He ran in to get all of the kids inside out. It was a school. His commander was yelling at him. By his tone of voice I could tell that he wasn't supposed to be saving the enemy's kids but he didn't care. I watched helplessly as he ran in.
After a few moments I heard a loud noise and kids streamed out, screaming and running as they were taken by soldiers who wanted to protect them. Soda didn't come out. I watched the door in agony hoping that he would run out. He didn't. That's when an enemy soldier walked out unharmed with a pistol in his hands.
"No!" I screamed but it was to late. I felt someone slaking me and I snapped awake. I gasped as I shot up into a sitting position and saw that Soda was the one shaking me awake.
"Eliza are you okay?" He asked with worry. I burst into tears and wrapped my arms around him. "Soda please don't go. Please don't." I cried. He held me close as he stroked my hair. He knew what i was talking about. "I won't. I already promised I won't." He said. I took deep breaths and calmed down.
"Eliza are you okay?" I heard Pony ask. He was sitting up in bed and was eating breakfast. He looked better than he had in days. I smiled at the sight of him eating. "Yeah. I'm okay." I said with a sigh of relief.
That was probably the worst dream I've ever had. I was glad that Pony was feeling better and that Soda promised he wouldn't leave. I pushed that dream away and told myself that everything was going to be fine now. I knew that Soda wouldn't break his promise to me. Everything was going to be fine.
Okay I know what your thinking. My story is getting dramatic and I'm sorry for that lol. I'm going to calm down on that. Anyways I hope you liked it. Next part coming soon!
God bless and Stay Gold!
