every few days lawrence would come and visit adam on his way into work, which wasn't hard since they were in the same building. though his memories of the bathroom hadn't yet returned, lawrence figured it was better this way. and though the last couple weeks have been hard on adam, lawrence was there to walk him through recovery, along with building up a new wall of trust and friendship. he would often sneak visits between his patients, making sure adam wouldn't feel left behind.
but after this pattern continued to grow their friendship a problem had arisen. adam would soon be discharged from the hospital. as the doctor walked down his usual route from his office to adam's room he was stopped by the nurse who worked at the front desk.
"dr gordon, may i have a word with you?" she asked. "sure." he walked over to her desk watching as she set her keyboard aside. she had a serious expression on her face as she turned her undivided attention towards the surgeon. it was unlike her not to smile.
"is this about adam?" he asked with his words laced with concern. she slowly nodded her head. "he is going to be discharged soon and i wanted to discuss it with you." she spoke with his file pulled up on her computer as she spoke.
"what's there to discuss?" lawrence asked, he would continue with his life as usual and adam would do the same. they are just two strangers who met one night at a hospital, and that's all he needed to know.
"he has nowhere to go. the landlord of his former apartment complex threw him out while he was in a coma. he was months overdue on his rent and hadn't been keeping up on his promises to pay her back." she said, folding her hands.
"what about parents?" lawrence asked, recalling back in the bathroom when adam wished he had spent more time with them. he thought it was a mistake that he cut contact with them, a mistake that he wanted to fix.
"well about that." she started. "from what i've seen, he has no close relatives that are willing to take him in.." her voice echoed concern as she spoke. "so what i am saying doctor, is that he's going to be out on the street by tonight, so i advised trying to help him find a place soon whether that be a friend, family, or partner."
he was taken aback by this sudden request. adam needed a place to stay, but did he have anywhere safe he could go? he entered the room while still pondering over where adam was going to stay. adam was watching the tv when lawrence came to visit. when he noticed the surgeon entering the room his face lit up.
"hey, i thought you wouldn't be swinging by today." adam says while pausing the television channel. "you of all people know i have a very busy schedule." lawrence stated, adam just rolled his eyes. he sat up on the less than comfortable hospital bed, and it was obvious that he was doing much better.
adam sighed, "yeah yeah i know." lawrence was the only one who visited him, so he was a bit disappointed on the days the surgeon didn't show. he pulled a chair over to adam's bed and sat down. "have you been feeling better?" lawrence asked.
adam just shrugged, "i'd say so." he answered honestly. he thought back to what the nurse said, how adam would be out on the street by sundown. lawrence just couldn't let that happen, there had to be somewhere he could go. "and you don't have a place to go when you leave?" the surgeon asked.
"not since that asshole of a landlord tossed all my stuff to the trash." he crossed his arms while leaning back against the white sheets. he figures since his apartment was emptied the camera he used for work was also trashed in the process.
adam sighed, trying to think of an alternative way that he wouldn't be tossed onto the street. "would you.. would you want to stay with me?" adam immediately perked up, looking at the surgeon with a puzzled expression. lawrence figured it was the least he could do to atone for leaving him behind. besides, what if jigsaw tried to recruit him into another game and lawrence wasn't there to step in?
that could mean big trouble for both of them. adam wouldn't die on his watch. lawrence waited for an answer, but what he didn't expect was a laugh.
"you want me as a roommate? yeah right, why would you take me in?" he scoffed, thinking the doctor was just joking around. though he wore a much more serious look which made adam question if he was sincere with his offer.
"i'm being serious adam. you're welcome to stay as long as you'd like." the doctor said, he needed to keep adam safe until he understood why john kept him alive. he needed to be able to keep a close eye on him and roommates seemed like a perfectly logical way to do that. adam cracked a soft smile.
"alright then, i'll take you up on that offer."
