Dawn had more fun in those three days before term started back up again than she had done the entire break. But of course, not everything lasts forever and classes were soon upon them once again.
The other three had grown obsessed with figuring out who this Nicolas Flamel was that Hagrid mentioned. Dawn was only helping them in hopes that finding out would fulfil their curiosity and they would leave it be. She thought it was only innocent interest. Up until Harry told her about a cloak he had been given for Christmas that once belonged to his father. It could turn people invisible and the very first thing he did with it was sneak into the restricted section. He didn't find anything on Nicolas Flamel but, after nearly being caught, he did find a magic mirror that showed you your hearts deepest desire. His was his family. All of them, his parents and grandparents and other relatives they had never met before, all standing around him and her.
"That sounds like it would make people go mad."
"That's what Dumbledore said. But he's moved it now."
"And for good reason! Three nights in a row, Harry, are you mental?"
Still, as much as the thought of such an item in a school full of children scared her, she couldn't help but think of what she would see in it. Perhaps when she was younger it would be finding true love like the girls in her storybooks. But now? Now it would probably be her family, whole and normal again with the added addition of Harry being loved and welcomed as one of their own. That would be nice.
The days went on and the snow turned into rain and the Gryffindor Quidditch team received the horrible news that Professor Snape was going to be refereeing their next match against Hufflepuff.
"Don't play," said Hermione, the moment they heard.
"Say you're ill," said Ron.
"Pretend to break your leg," Hermione suggested.
"Actually break your leg -"
"Please don't break your leg!" said Dawn anxiously.
"I can't do any of that," said Harry. "There isn't a reserve Seeker. If I back out now, Gryffindor can't play at all."
"Are we really certain it was Snape who was jixing his broom?" said Dawn. "It could have been someone else."
"He's refereeing the match," pointed out Ron. "He's never wanted to do that before."
They didn't further that discussion, as Neville came hobbling through the portrait hole with his legs tied together with the leg-locking curse. While everyone cruelly laughed, Hermione performed the counter spell and Dawn helped him into a chair.
"What happened?"
"Malfoy," said Neville grimly. "I met him outside the library. He said he'd been looking for someone to practise it on."
"Go to Professor McGonagall," Hermione insisted. "Report him!"
Neville only shook his head. "I don't want more trouble."
"You've got to stand up to him, Neville," said Ron. "He's used to walking all over people, but that's no reason to lie down in front of him and make it easier."
