"Fire and ice are opposites, but they have one thing in common—they both can destroy everything in the world. They represent self destructing human emotions such as hatred and desire. They both have the ability to create disasters."

"And who is stopping them?"

The slow burning feeling I get in my cheeks when the flames curl and smoke makes me giddy with warmth. I am completely calm.

I have already burned my hands-and I have not even touched the flames.

That's what it was like with Lance. I didn't even need to touch him to know I was completely falling. And he was too, or so he told me. He told me that I was his fire and he was the ice. That we were so different that we were one.

"But, can't flames destroy everything? I could destroy you." I told him one night, the last day of my sophomore year and his junior, cuddled up together in my bed.

He stroked my chin and dragged his finger till he reached my collarbone. I waited patiently for an answer.

"Flames can destroy everything. But so can ice. You see, ice comes when the flames are put out. Ice comes and it freezes the world and makes people cold and bitter. Nobody appreciates ice." He raises his eyes to meet mine.

"That's why fire and ice are so alike. They both can destroy everything."

"Or each other." I replied, leaning in ever so slightly.

"No," he said quietly, "if brought together they make something new."

So-we did.
