As Verdigo was pulled into the portal something else had happened beforehand.

Gaster had been trying to create artificial souls for who knows how long. And it had been nothing but failure after failure. In all honesty, Gaster was about to give up on the whole project until he got his last theory. If this was not to work he would have to scrap the whole idea.
He used a laser to cut two holes in each of his hands and placed the cut bone into two tubes that had a special type of liquid that he made. He soon left to heal his hands as the liquid did its magic.
He had left the tubes alone for months, and as time passed two figures could now be seen in the tubes. The plan had worked. All he had to do was wait for them to wake up and see if they had any side effects.
You might be wondering why he wanted to create artificial souls in the first place. Well, it's because Gaster was the last skeleton in the Underground. He didn't want his species to go extinct and their traditions to fade. Not only that but he also wanted to be a father (he won't admit it though).
