"Hey Ethan, Do you have a minute?" I ask jogging up to him. He's walking in a rush to the inside of the pack house. It's been a couple days since the ceremony and seeing Ethan has been getting harder. He has taken on more responsibility and has barely any time to send a text back to me.
"Edan, I'm sorry but not right now" he says looking back and hurrying more. I slow down and let him run inside. I would have to do my own research then if he was going to be busy like this. It was heart wrenching feeling ignored by him after we had spent every day together for weeks, maybe it was a one sided friendship and he was just obligated to be there for me. Whatever the case I had to figure out the deal my parents made with whoever they made it with.
"Oh Mr. Radcliffe" I shout and notice him walking from the forest. He could be the next best after Ethan or even better if he was Alpha or Beta about the time I was born. Now that I think about it Ethan wasn't the best option, he wouldn't know the history as well or as first hand. Dane perks up into my direction and begins walking towards me. I jog to meet him halfway which was much further than I thought so I ended up huffing when I reached him. He chuckled and patted my back.
"What can I do for you kid?" He asks while walking towards the pack house again. I follow him walking at his side.
"I need to know about my parents" what I say has him immediately stop in his tracks and look at me questioningly.
"What do you need to know after so long? And which set?" He asked scratching the back of his head.
"Do you know about my biological too?" I ask a little taken aback.
"Yes technically I know of them" he says looking away. I eye him but let it go for now because there's something more serious. I shake my head at the temptation.
"No, I want to know about my current parents" I hold his eyes with mine and I try to read him. He sighs and turns towards the pack house motioning me with his hand to follow. I quickly catch up to him walking next to him.
"Why the sudden interest?" He asks slowing down a bit as he walks up the stairs.
"I overheard something they said and I wanted to know more information before I ask them considering they're human and I'm not" I say shrugging a bit.
"Well alright, we have a file on them in the archive room" with that, Dane leads the way up the stairs and into a room that also leads into the attic. The room was filled to the brim with filing cabinets all the way to the ceilings.
"The one we need is up here" Dane says walking up the stairs. I follow him up the narrow staircase into a room barely filled with cabinets. It looks like the room had been emptied and what was left was trash they were too lazy to bring down. A single filing cabinet was left, placed in the center of the room.
"It's kept in this room without any other files? It's almost a waste of space" I state approaching the cabinet.
"Well we did just go through it all and this file was mostly left to you, the only rogue on our territory that took a permanent residence on our land" he shrugs and starts to walk away.
"So this is all for me?" I ask sitting in front of the cabinet.
"Yeah have fun" he says walking out.
I open the first drawer of the cabinet but feel it tug easily, which meant it was partially empty, except for a single file. I pulled the file out and found the documents loosely tucked in. The first file was on my mother.
Noreen Curren
It read her age, her occupation and any medical she had and requires. There wasn't anything uniquely special about her so I put her file to the side and looked at my dad.
Derek Curren
The same thing was read about his file. Basic information nothing stood out. This was either going to be a dead end or a clue to something more. I collected the files and put them back into a singular folder neatly and rummaged through anything else in the cabinet. The second drawer was emptier than the first so my hunting was done on any information about who my parents are. I grabbed the files and made my way down the stairs and into the entrance of the house.
"Hey Edan" Greg said snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Oh hey Greg" I reply not interested in staying at the house anymore.
"Where you off to?" He asks sparking a conversation I didn't want to get into. He had leaned over the railing on the stairs to look up at me coming down.
"I just came to grab a file on my parents" I said holding the file up a bit for him to see.
"What are there only two papers in there?" He jokes but in actuality there were simply three pieces of paper in here.
"Yeah pretty much" I huff annoyed and jump the last step.
"Wait really? That's all that was in that room?" He asks motioning for the file. I didn't see the harm in showing him the files, I doubt I would be getting much information out of it. He grabbed it and opened it up looking at the three flimsy papers in the folder. He let out a laugh but handed it over.
"I told you" I said a little defeated.
"What are you doing with this, if you don't mind me asking" I took the file from him and ran my fingers over the edges.
"I want to know more about them, something seemed off the other night" I gave him more info than Dane but still kept mostly to myself about it. If I was being paranoid, I'd rather it just be me than others.
"Well already something is off, these files are too small even for someone like you" Greg mentioned.
"What do you mean?" I ask pulling out the page on my dad.
"Well for starters your dad's movements on doctors appointments, past places he's lived, his parents and any family history and so on" Greg says and flips the paper over multiple times looking for something remotely similar to the topics he mentioned.
"So it's like they just came into existence?" I asked trying to piece it together. Why would my parents have come into existence just to adopt me. Why are they covering their past, what was their past?
"I don't think your dad is who he says he is at least" Greg says tentatively handing me the paper back. It looked like he didn't want to offend me but I was a big girl, I could handle the fact that my parents aren't who they said they were.
"Yeah, I got that feeling too" I say glumly. Maybe I should talk to Ethan about it, is it an issue that needs his attention though?
"Well let me know if I can help" Greg says and trades places with me to run up the stairs. I walk out the door ready to go do research now on the two people who raised me my whole life. Should I also ask Dane about my biological? I'll save that for a later date, right now I have to figure out my adoptive parents intentions.
I sat inside a cafe on my laptop sipping whatever fancy latte they had as a special here, figuring out who people are was a tough job. When I looked up information on public records, the same basic information popped up that I had from the pack house. No previous addresses, no known pervious information before the year I was born. My mom didn't have a maiden name either nor did her prescription for glasses show in her file but she's needed them for as long as I can remember, her act is good if she actually doesn't need them to see. How would I handle this situation? Should I confront them? Confronting them will give me the answers I need and it seems like my next step for information. At dinner tonight I will bring it up. Who are Noreen and Derek Curren?
