It had been a week since we moved and I loved the U.S.

I knew English well because my parents taught me ever since I was younger, knowing we were coming here eventually.

I hadn't gone to my school yet as it was currently summer but there's only two days left before I could experience the American dream.

I saw my young neighbor outside of my window while I was still arranging my room, playing with his toys.

'Why is he playing with Barbies?'

Then my mom came in and saw what I was looking at and made me go over at their house to ask him if we could play together

"Momm.. pleeaaassseee. Who even plays with toys anymore, especially Barbies and as a BOY. He looks my age and I don't play with them!"

She slapped me.

"I'm not your friend so you're gonna show some respect. Go out there and make some friends or else." She said pointing his house and glaring at me.

I forcefully went over. My cheek was still burning but I was so used to it or didn't hurt anymore. I wanted to cry not because it was still hurting but because I didn't understand how she could say she loved but still hit me.

The house was only a few seconds of walk but in these precious seconds, I prayed so that guy wouldn't be clingy like Nivan.

"You got this Diore" I said out loud.

"You're my age and you're talking to yourself. What are you, a baby!?" He scuffed

I looked up and saw that same boy I was observing earlier. He was pretty  that's for sure but what was his attitude.

'Maybe it's his way of joking'

I breathed in and tried to stay calm

"Hi! I'm Diore. I saw you playing with your toys and I was wondering whether I could play with you or not" I ended with a smile

Wow, even I was surprised of my niceness.

"Yeah sure I'm coming in a sec"

'Mom is gonna be so proud of me' I thought

He came with a huge smile.

'Weirdo' was the only thing that came to my mind but I kept my words to myself, I was here to make friends.

"I have a fun game"

"Really!" I loved games, they were so much fun. I had the happiest memories playing games back in South Africa.

"What is it? What do I have to do" I sounded like an excited puppy.

'I should calm down'

"So basically you have to sit in the middle of the road, for a few minutes without moving, then when I call you you have to run the fastest that you can to come get this ball" he showed me a green ball, my favorite color.

"How do you win the game?" I asked

"I'll have my eyes closed so you have to get it without me feeling you coming, okay?"

"But sitting in the middle of the road seems dangerous" I asked naively

"Don't worry I've done it like a dozen of times with my friends. It's safer than a plane" he told me smiling to his ears

I didn't know whether to trust him or not but I still did it, hoping it would make us bond.

My heart was racing as I was walking slowly toward the middle of the road. I was sat.

"Are you sure this is not dangerous?" I asked him

"Not at all" he grinned.

"What's your name again?"

"It's Devon. Devon LeCrown."

He smiled and I felt like I truly made myself a friend.

I smiled at him back, something I didn't do a lot.

He started to walk away with the ball and I was just standing there, in the middle of the road waiting for him to call me.

But he never did. He was still in front of me but he was sat down his head on his shoulders like he was sleeping.

I thought it was all apart of the game so I stayed for hours. I waited and waited and waited but he never called me. There were a few cars that I thankfully heard coming so I went further from the road each time. But like an obedient dog, I went back in the middle of the road everytime.

'Maybe he forgot, he's gonna call me eventually. Hopefully he's not sleeping ' it would have been so embarrassing for me to have stayed in place while he was taking a nap IN FRONT OF ME.

I mean, who does that!?

My mom came and asked me what I was doing I told her we were just playing she looked at me curiously and at my surroundings only to see Devon who had raised his head and looked awake. Then she went back home.

"Be careful sweetie"

After that,  I heard a horn, some people yelling.

I didn't understand what was happening until I felt it.

The crash.
