Basically in the entire beginning of the story they are humans, and there will be a definitive change in the story when they no longer are.
Some of the characters are gender bent, pretty much all the JW except winter and kinkajou are gender bent so that would be:

another thing is that the JW aren't in school anymore and are like the equivalent to like 22 now... so adults. and they all live together (for the story)
