KARENINA-CHENG

part III.

✦✦✦

"You're so screwed." Chae snickers, cracking her back as they get ready for the Nike shoot.

"What?" She wheels around, still lost in thought and worry.

"I mean, you forgot Chelsea's latte, duh.."

"Oh, yeah." She chuckles awkwardly, thinking Chae had somehow read her mind.

"I just got sidetracked at the cafe, you know?" She shrugs, thinking back to the cute chai latte customer.

"Shut up. Chelsea is coming."

Spencer swallows nervously, pushing a good-natured smile forward as Chae snorts indignantly.

"You could find a guy on tinder? You don't have to be alone forever, you know." She whispers, hushed with her eyes still on her friend.

"Chae. I'm set with what I have."

Her thoughts wander back to the boy at the coffee shop and his charming smile.

She snaps back to reality as Chae begins fixing her makeup for the umpteenth time, tutting like a mom. It's her, Chelsea, and Chae, all dancers from The Royal Ballet.
The whole theme for the campaign was 'universal athletes' which oddly happened to include the ballerinas.

Chae and Chelsea knew it was just a ploy for Nike to sign Spencer into a contract. Spencer had her suspicions but didn't outright say anything, not when so much was riding on this tour.

The shoot was a huge part of their world tour this year, with Nike as one of the biggest sponsors with all the other plush designers she couldn't afford until recently. It was them, and some organization called FIA, who also had a tour of sorts going on at the same time. Spencer wasn't really sure.

The Nike label on her orange sports bra shone in the faux sunlight as she shimmied on a pair of short Nike pros. Garbage bag pants forgotten, folded up onto her chair, Spencer scans the room quietly.

She's standing in the corner with Chae, who's snickering over Spencer's true ability to make trouble.

"What, you got some kind of secret boyfriend we don't know about?"

A muffled choke escapes her lips as she swallows the water she hasn't spit out.
Spencer grins awkwardly and looks at Chae with murderous intent.
She shakes her head, chuckling.

"Nah. Just don't have the time, I guess." She shrugs, looking away like a wilted flower.

"I really want the promotion this year, and it's impossible enough already-"

"Li-li, it's okay. You don't have to explain it." Chae pats her friend's stiff shoulder, as Spencer rolls it out with a pop.

"You know my mom; we're going to have to visit, and I don't want to bring just anyone to see Jhene." She pretends to be annoyed, when in reality she's shit out of luck.

She's picking at her face before Chae swats her hand away.
"Don't smear that makeup, I worked hard on it." It's simple, but has a pretty chocolate liner that makes her eyes pop and peachy blush and gloss that makes her look tan and glowy.

Her dark haired friend groans, pulling her leg up and cracking it in a side extension.

She points and flexes her foot a few times, leaning into her split.
Her orange running sneakers are big and chunky, paired with thick white nike socks.

Spencer seemed to squirm in her own skin at times, with eyes scrutinizing her every move. If only she could just relax.

That seemed impossible.
Lately, at least.
