Introduction

Hallo. My name is Wilheim von Reinhardt, and I am a pilot in the Luftwaffe.

This war we are in now has been going on for five years, since September the first of the year 1939. It's 1944 now. It seems like it will never end. Each day the war drags on and our economy gets worse, but there's nothing we can do about it. A man by the name of Adolf Hitler vowed to make our country better and rid us of the bad economy, but I haven't seen that happen yet. Of course, he has made it where our country is no longer paying for the reparations of the others; we no longer follow the Treaty of Versailles. We now have a military, which created jobs for people like me, but overall, I haven't seen much good come from the man.
In fact, to be completely honest with you, he makes me question everything I know. His hatred for the Jewish race seems rather uncalled for to me. Also, his hatred for the gypsies, the disabled, the communists, the Russians... I had a girlfriend that was Russian, and she was taken from me and put into a camp. I haven't seen her since.

I had heard rumors of what goes on at the concentration camps, but having never seen them myself, I had a hard time being able to believe it. I guess I just didn't want to believe that humanity could be so cruel, and especially not my own beloved country! I mean, I knew they killed people, but I liked to think it was quick and painless. My brother, Friedrich, a "doctor" in the SS, proved to me otherwise. He would go into detail on their "experiments," and so the cover was lifted from my eyes and I could see what der Führer really was.

Hitler is a gifted speaker, very charismatic, so he has my entire nation following him like he is some sort of glorified god.Those of us who aren't quite sure or disagree entirely know better than to open our mouths about it though; we could end up dead.

And so it is with silence that I carry out my job, trying to pretend that my country is in the right, when deep down I know that it is not.
