It was early one morning in the year 2021, after waking from a nightmare in which she had witnessed the death of a faceless and nameless being, that Hazel, for the first time in many years, experienced the feeling she thought she had overcome.

She wiped the sweat from her brow in the darkness of the bedroom as soon as she awoke, as if it would remove the anxious remnants of her recent sleep, turned on the night lamp, and turned her head back to look for Robert. Her husband was asleep.

He went down to the kitchen for a glass of water but paused at the window for a moment. Outside, the wind rattled the branches rather roughly, indicating the imminent arrival of a storm. Although Hazel enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of rain against the bedroom window, for some reason she would have preferred to see a full moon against a starry sky that night.

Her scratchy throat and parched lips reminded her of the need to quench her thirst, so she carefully arranged the curtains and moved away from the window towards the kitchen.

Tic-tic. Hazel stopped abruptly. Tick-tock. She turned to the window overlooking the street, convinced she had heard the distinctive tapping of something against the glass, but there was nothing in the light of the curtains. "It's the wind," she said to herself, in a failed attempt to dissipate her unease. Then she distinctly heard another ticking sound, this time coming from another of the windows. She followed the sound, which was repeated three more times, without being able to determine any apparent cause, except for the howling wind that shook the outside.

Tic-tic... tic-tic... TIC-TIC, TIC-TIC, TIC-TIC, TIC-TIC!

A heavy hand rested on Hazel's shoulder, causing the woman to let out a shriek of terror that would have alarmed the neighbors had it not been for the storm.

"Hazie, honey, calm down, it's me," Robert announced. The light from outside illuminated half of his face, though it seemed lost in the depths of his dark eyes.

"Are you trying to scare me to death?"

"I am sorry. I called out to you several times, but you ignored me. You seemed immersed in something."

"I was just distracted by the wind. It looks like rain is coming." She glanced at the street from the other window and adjusted the curtain again, this time less neatly than before.

Robert sat on the couch, his head resting on the back and his eyes lost in the ceiling.

"Today is the tenth anniversary of..."

"I know, there's no need to mention it," Hazel cut him off.

"We should bring her flowers, or maybe one of those little dolls she liked, do they still make them?"

"Why are you talking about this, Robert? Now."

"Not mentioning it won't make it go away, Hazie. Besides, the doctor said you should see him, four years ago."
