The incessant pattering of the rain was getting on her nerves; every time the automatic windshield moved, every time it screeched with excessive friction against the windshield, Olivia jumped. She couldn't help it; no matter how hard she tried to be aware of it, her heart shrank again with every clatter. Even the loud music couldn't calm her; her pulse was racing, and her posture had been tense for twenty minutes.

The young lawyer tried to concentrate on the road and not make any sudden movements; it was dark, one of her car's headlights was broken, and the asphalt was slippery.

The old vehicle could barely make it up the hill; the slopes were a slippery and dangerous nightmare. But Olivia knew she couldn't turn back; it was raining cats and dogs, she didn't have enough room to maneuver and turn around, and she was freezing cold, tired, and hungry.

If there was one thing that was broken in her vehicle, it was the heater. Besides the passenger window, which was stuck and wouldn't close all the way.

She had often joked with friends and co-workers that her car was as much of a disaster as she was; it was her reflection, like a kindred spirit.

"Liv, you should think about retiring it," Henry had told her on several occasions. It had been almost a year since she had heard his voice again, but it played in her head almost every day.

The mere thought of it sent shivers down her spine. Fortunately, or unfortunately, a beeping sound made her forget those bitter feelings.

Olivia immediately snapped back to reality and reached into her purse. It was not large, resting on the seat next to her, but at that moment it seemed to be a bottomless pit. The young woman rifled through her things, trying to keep her eyes on the road. But she was in trouble; her phone kept ringing insistently and she was going to miss the call. She knew she was about to enter an area where she would lose reception, so she decided to look away for a moment to know where she was; she managed to brush her fingers over her phone, and as she focused back on the road, a shadow crossed her path.

The light that indicated an imminent collision was flashing brightly; the brakes of the car were squealing like a wounded animal. Olivia feared the worst; her heart skipped a beat and her head banged hard against the dashboard, but she managed to keep steering. She would have to add the airbag to the list of damages.

There, in the darkness, two red eyes stared back at her. In the dim light, one of her headlights caught a glimpse of a deer across the road, its imposing antlers pointing straight up to the sky.
