you got the call in the middle of a press conference. tony was flipping people off, everyone was shouting, things were getting out of hand and your phone started buzzing in your back pocket. it's a wonder you heard it over all the noise. "yes, this is she," you answered after they said your name.

cold dread crept in as the woman on the other end told you that bucky had been admitted to a hospital in vienna; the exact place fury had sent him to gather intel. it should've been a simple, one-man job. no engagement necessary, but things around here never really went as planned.

now you were on a quinjet headed straight to him. on any regular airline it would've been an eight hour flight, but fury thought a private jet was the least he could do after sending your husband on a suicide mission. you agreed.

it shaved off a good two hours, but the entire flight was still spent pacing back and forth. you pressed your clammy hands together over and over just to give yourself something to distract yourself. you were sure that if you stopped moving you would spiral into a full on panic attack.

you took a deep breath and thought back to bucky's call from that morning.

"hey, doll. how'd you sleep last night?"

"fine. better if you were here..." you said with a sigh.

bucky laughed, but he understood completely.

"well i should be back within the next couple of days and then we'll both sleep for a week, how 'bout that?"

now it was your turn to laugh.

steve came to the back to see how you were holding up. he'd been the one flying the plane, probably not the best idea considering his reputation. "you alright?"

you looked up bewildered, "who's flying the plane?"

"autopilot," he said with a sympathetic smile.

you only nodded. obviously he had it on autopilot, it didn't take a genius to figure that one out but your mind was clearly elsewhere. too worried about bucky to think logically.

"you should probably get some rest," steve said, noticing the dark circles under your eyes.

immediately, you shook your head. you would not rest until you knew that everything would be okay. that he would be okay.

a few more torturous hours and the plane finally landed. you had to get a car to come pick you up and take you to the hospital that the woman on the phone said bucky would be at.

as soon as you arrived, you ran in with steve right behind you. your hair was a mess and you looked exhausted, but only one thing mattered in this moment.

the hospital was mostly empty and had one flickering bulb that was making this moment just that much more unnerving. an older woman sat at the front desk and didn't bother giving you a smile as you made your way over to her.

"hi, i'm here to see my husband," you said with a slight quiver in your voice.

the woman just kept her eyes on her computer and began typing, "last name?"

"uh, barnes."

she sighed as she continued tapping the keys on her desktop. then, her printer started whirring to life and a few moments later she handed you freshly printed forms to fill out, "you can get started on these while you wait."

you frowned and shook your head, "i'm sorry, wait? you don't understand, i need to see my husband now."

she raised her eyebrows and looked back and forth between you and steve. steve just looked down. "ma'am, there are other patients in this hospital and the doctors are busy. as soon as his is available, i will have them come out and explain everything to you."

you felt the tears forming in your eyes, "no, please. i don't need anyone to explain anything, i just need to see him." you leaned forward as you practically begged this careless woman to give you some sign of hope.

steve pulled you back and into his chest before taking the papers, "thank you." he lead you over to one of those cold metal waiting room chairs. you held your head in your hands as tears poured down your face. steve began on the forms while rubbing your back comfortingly.

you just cried and prayed to any god that would listen. you were used to losing things. friends, family, just losing in general and you could say that maybe you'd become accustomed to that pain. but losing bucky, that was different. losing bucky would break you.
