The tube was finally out of her throat. Christine reached up and touched her lips, despite the pain it caused throughout her body. She swirled her tongue and stretched her jaw. What a relief! She thought. She tried to speak, but her vocal chords were so weak and sore, that she barely made out a squeek. She looked up at Dr. Getz with frustration in her eyes.
"I know you want to speak, but your throat is going to be very sore for a little while, so you need to rest. That way it can heal." The doctor helped adjust her body to get comfortable and then kissed Christine's forehead. She walked over to the door and turned down the lights. "Goodnight, Little Angel."
Christine fought it, but sleep was inevitable. She drifted off and dreamt one last sweet dream, before her entire world would come crashing down.

Christine was awakened by a nurse checking her vitals. She poked and prodded her IVs and adjusted her heart monitor.
"Where is Dr. Getz?" Christine hardly recognized her own voice. It was scratchy and very horse.
"She will be here to see you shortly." The nurse replied. "Can I get you anything while you wait?"
Christine didn't hesitate when she answered, "Water, please." Her mouth felt like a dessert.
"Absolutely! I will be right back." And the nurse rushed out of the room.
Within moments, the nurse returned with a cup of ice water with a straw. Accompanying her was Dr. Getz.
As Christine sipped the water, Dr. Getz reviewed her chart.
"Everything is looking very good, Honey." The doctor said, reassuringly.
"Where is my mommy?" Christine had been longing to ask this question since she woke up. The words darted out of her mouth like a cannon.
Dr. Getz gave Christine a grim look and then turned away. Her stomach turned, the words felt trapped within her heart.
Christine stared at the doctor, anticipating her response. She could tell that she wasn't going to like the answer, but she wanted to know. However, nothing could prepare her for this.
"When do I get to see my family?" Christine impatiently pestered.
With a long face and a heavy heart, Dr. Getz said the words she had been dreading for days. "I'm so sorry Christine, but your mom and sister didn't survive the accident."
The words pierced Christine's soul, and she was paralyzed. Tears were fighting to come spouting out, but Christine felt numb. Disbelief consumed her, and then she felt an overwhelming sense of anger. A fiery inferno raged within her. She wanted to scream, but her lips were pressed so hard, the sound could not escape. She refused to make eye contact with Dr. Getz. Her face got red, and she balled up her fists. She wanted to hit something, kick something, anything, but she couldn't move.
My family is.... Dead. She unballed her fists, and finally allowed reality to set in. Her walls came crumbling down, and her rage faded into despair. Then the tears came pouring out like waterfalls. Her body shook and her heart was shattered.
Dr. Getz wrapped her arms around Christine, with tears streaming down her cheeks. Neither one of them said a word, they simple sat together and cried. All the while, the doctor knew she had more confessions to bare on this poor child.
