The procedure was simple: get the doors open, get back to the vault, and don't die. Ever since The Long Pause, the families were put in charge of making the "tough decisions" for the community. The knee jerk reaction was to shut them off from the rest of the world. The oil drilling plant situated underground would provide them enough oil to wait out the disassembly drones.

When the decision was made public to the people, the bunker seemed to become deathly cold. Many of his peers began to spiral into sadness or violence. His male friends began to sneak out a collection of MP5's from their security closet to "train for combat". They were soon discovered after many of the students noticed strange bandages and wounds appearing on the jocks. Publicly, they were scolded and held back a year. Behind closed doors, they along with many other children were added to a private defense force.

When Thad later learned about the death of Uzi's mother, he felt the need to comfort her. Sure, his friends told him she would move on just like everyone else did, but his gut told him something was wrong. Maybe it was because his own dad never returned, but Thad began to talk to Mr.Doorman about how the bunker worked. When the first radio signal in weeks since silence was first picked up, many of the people were excited, that maybe the invaders left or died out. Khan was the one who was in the highest spirits, until the radio reported that it was a war.

Thad was fairly young when it happened, what Khan did in the drilling plant he along with the rest of the council would take to their graves. After the incident, Khan was demoted to a security officer. After this happened, the climate of the bunker changed. It became more positive, but extremely shaky. The doors would open at randomly planned intervals, allowing caravaneers to come in and sell their wares to the people.

Thad and his friends found them to be untrustworthy, though they did buy bullets for their approved nightly training. Thad recalled how pushy they were with trying to suck as much private and biometric data from them. The caravaneers also began selling weapons to the children, Uzi included. He wondered if this war was even real, but the constant security feeds made it clear, they were being hunted.

Mr.Doorman took him under his wing when Uzi left the bunker. Men, they were always confused when it came to dealing with women, even their own daughters. Thad learned more about Uzi through him than he ever did just talking to the girl herself. All of that was in the back of his head now. He received the news of murder drones from Lizzy who was aiming the light on her gun into his eyes. They were in their territory. The ULU had failed to protect them.

Thad made it to the door and entered the override code to start opening the doors. The loud hum and groaning of metal would alert everyone, he had to hide.

Over a dozen worker drones had made their way into carts that were attached to the back of their van. Most of the worker drones had sold off their vehicles, save for a few trucks that were used to move equipment around the bunker. Ruger's operation was going well. Noone had died yet, and they hadn't been caught by those vampires. That was until V2 woke back up.

According to her, the worker drones were a liability and a resource drain. They were abandoning the people here, and were leaving at this moment.

"I'm taking charge." V2 said, "everyone lets pull out, now."

"Wait! The doors aren't-"

"Shut up!" V2 barked, "Get in the van or I'm leaving you!"

She grabbed Willard by the coat

"Open those gates now."

"But Ruger said-"

"And I'm your superior. DO IT NOW!" she screamed
