September, 2023.

After an hour of listening to the songs that reminded Minji of him, she decided to take a walk around the campus. Everything is still very much the same. This is bad ... So bad that it helped Minji to recollect the pieces of her long-try-to-be-forgotten memories. She stopped at the front of the music club room and reminisced about their first encounter.

June, 2019.

Minji was a member of the music club. Even though she hates socializing with people, she tried her best to contribute to the club by winning many competitions in singing and playing piano. She came to the room every day and do at least 1 hour of practice.

But that day, she wasn't there for practice.

Minji was lost. She was lost for letting her fingers dance so beautifully on piano keys like a swallow darting on a pond for fish.

All she did was playing the keys faster, making the sound grew louder until she could feel the vibration tingling her skin, ears, and heart. The louder it got, the faster her heart race.

As she got calmer, she sang.

Happy birthday to me

Happy birthday to me

Happy birthday

Happy birthday

Happy birthday to me

If Mozart or Beethoven could come back alive, they would probably cry. They might cry looking at how pathetic Minji looked right now. Messy hair with tears running down her face, who wouldn't be sad??

At this point, other rooms and corridors were silent. But Minji's sad melodies were echoing all over the room, and maybe outside too.

Oh, outside!

Minji forgot that she was not the only person in her campus right now. She never thought that outside of the room, there was someone walking who was surpised to hear the combination sound of piano, singing, and crying at the same time.

And that someone was right in front of the door.

He was questioning himself whether to enter the room or not, as he was extremely curious but also afraid to be known as impolite. It was his first day, after all. Since he was a transfer student, making a good first impression was his main goal.

"It's not a ghost, isn't it?" He mumbled, had no other choice than to open the door since he became super curious than ever.

As he opened the door, the portrait of a girl playing a piano and singing happy birthday in a sad tone brought a bit of a shock to him. He was expecting five or a few members of the music club, practicing a sad musical drama or something. That's what he imagined in his head.

But now, as Minji looked back, he realized.

He realized that it wasn't a sad musical drama at all. The girl, Minji, had long straight black hair, her eyes were also as black as the night sky. It was a real sadness, written all over her face.

Realizing the fact that someone had seen her in a very miserable condition, Minji quickly wiped her tears and get out of the room, leaving the boy standing still.

He was not sure what had happened. It was too fast. After a second, his eyes caught an unusual object on top of the piano.

Birthday cake with an unblown candle.

It's her birthday!

As a reflex response, he took the cake and ran after Minji. While trying so hard to keep the candle still on, he looked everywhere but there was no sign of Minji. Until, there was a crying sound. It was very low, as if Minji tried her best to not break the silence.

He approached her at the end of the corridor and sat beside her.

"I'm sorry, you left this."

Minji was unbothered. She wiped her tears, again, making sure the boy didn't see any one of them freefalling from her cheeks.

"Happy birthday."

For now, Minji was puzzled. The boy kept looking at her with a genuine smile and glowing eyes. He handed the cake to Minji, gesturing her to blow the candle.

"What?"

"It's your birthday, right?!"

"Then what?"

"What do you mean, what? Close your eyes, think about your wish, and quickly blow this candle. My hands are starting to cramp, you see."

"I never asked you to bring that. We don't know each other."

"We don't need to know each other to celebrate a happy day. Besides, I know you. I saw the poster of you winning a competition."

"I'm not happy, for your information."

"Then let's wish to be happy. Today, tomorrow, and forever. You deserve that."

Minji was not so sure about what to do now. She already had a bad feeling that strange things would happen from the moment she saw that boy entered the music room and witnessed her miserable actions.

"Okay Miss girl, please blow this candle before—"

Whoosh.

The boy's pupils dilated, didn't believe that Minji actually blew the candle and a  bit of sadness in her face was degrading.

He smiled, "Happy birthday, Kim Minji. I wish you to be the happiest girl on earth."

It was really strange. Minji didn't even know this boy. She was not happy with her birthday. In fact, a few moments ago she tried to let go of her sad emotions by singing and playing piano. Before meeting this boy, she had plan to throw away the cake as there was nobody who wants to celebrate it together.

Nobody.

Nobody but;

"My name is Beomgyu. Choi Beomgyu."
