She didn't like them.
That was all Ayra could think as she stared at the couple in front of her.
After Matron had left, she had brushed her blue hair and put it into a ponytail, turning it a dark shade of brown after Matron had come back again and threatened her.
She had then changed into the clothes matron had given her, the jeans and jacket being a little bit too big for her, but then, so was everything else she owned.
In all, she had been ready in less than ten minutes and had sat down on her window sill, peering out her window, waiting anxiously for them to arrive.
But one look at the couple and a few more minutes in their company had cleared what little hope Ayra had. With their pudgy faces, unfriendly beady eyes that kept surveying her creepily, and grim expressions on their faces, Ayra thought she didn't quite want to go with them. In fact, she thought she almost wanted to stay at the orphanage. Almost.
"Hmm. She's way too thin." The man said, looking her up and down, a deep frown on his face."And her hair's rather too long for a girl her age. I'm afraid she'll have to cut it" he said murmuring the last part quietly but Ayra heard. Her eyes widened in horror and she had to do her best to stop her hair from changing colour just then.
Cut her hair?!
"And she's a bit old too. But as well. Babies are rather difficult and fussy." He continued still murmuring, stroking his goatee as he observed her.
His wife then spoke up. "Why don't we go to the zoo?" She asked in what Ayra thought was supposed to be a sweet tone. " We could get to know you better?"
Ayra didn't want to go anywhere with them and had just opened her mouth to say so when the matron spoke.
"She would love to. Ayra just loves the zoo, isn't that so Ayra?" Matron asked, turning to her, her eyes narrowed in warning.
Ayra didn't answer, but stared back at her blankly, blinking twice.
Matron's eyes twitched in supressed annoyance and Ayra almost let out a laugh.
"Wonderful! Why don't you get in the car then, and we'll be off." the lady said clapping her hands together once.
And that's how Ayra found herself in the backseat of a car with two strangers.
They had been driving for sometime when the car finally stopped.
They had arrived at the zoo."Come on. Get out" the man said getting out of the car with his wife, neither bothering to wait for her.
And so rolling her eyes, Ayra undid her seat belt and stepped out of the car, her jaw dropping slightly as she looked around. She had never been to a zoo before.
There were so many animals. And so many stalls selling so many snacks and souvenirs. She couldn't help the small smile that made it's way onto her face as she continued looking around.
"Come on girl!" The man huffed getting her attention.
She hurried to catch up to them as they moved in the crowd.
They had been walking, passing many stalls on their way when Ayra caught sight of a family of two boys leaving an ice cream stall.
Her eyes still fixed on the stall, she drew to a stop, taking hold of the man's sleeve and tugging lightly to get his attention.
"Could I get an ice cream please?" She begged, her grey eyes looking pleadingly at him.The man looked like he wanted to refuse but before he could object, the stall owner but in.
"Aren't you a pretty thing? What would you like dearie?" the old lady gushed, smiling kindly at Ayra.
And that was how Ayra ended up getting a strawberry cone.
